In this lesson, Jay Mijares examines Jesus’ words in John 14:12–14, where He promises that those who believe in Him will do “greater works” and that whatever is asked in His name will be done. At first glance, these statements can seem confusing or even unrealistic. Yet Jesus speaks these words while preparing His disciples for the time after His departure, pointing them toward the mission that would follow His return to the Father. The “greater works” Jesus speaks of do not mean that believers will perform miracles greater than the Son of God. Instead, they refer to the greater reach and impact of the gospel after Jesus ascended and the Holy Spirit was given. During His earthly ministry, Jesus largely remained within Israel, but through the apostles and the early church the message of salvation spread throughout the world. The greatest miracle is not physical healing but the spiritual transformation that occurs when someone turns to Christ and receives salvation. Jesus’ promise about prayer is also often misunderstood.
