| 5/2/26 | The A-Trane 2026-05-01 - Lateef RSD, Minemoto, Miles Pre-BotC, BDs | Just some musical fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, lotsa birthdays with nods to Duke's last week (an extended 1949 arrangement of the theme with the orchestra gets us going), Ambrose Akinmusire, Shirley Horn, the late Carlos Ward, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, James Newton and an oblique recognition of the centenary last week of Chicago impresario Joe Segal whose Jazz Showcase archives are being mined by Zev Feldman for a series of Record Store Day releases. Today's feature is a tremendous Yusef Lateef quartet which includes Kenny Barron from 1975 - Alight upon the Lake! A preview of the new project Goodbye Strawberry Hill from Sharon Minemoto that tells her family's story from the incarceration and separation of her family and the Canadians of Japanese heritage in the Second World War to their resilience and optimism of the present day. Her quartet's performance at the Anvil Theatre in New West tomorrow evening (May 2nd) will also feature a screening of a short documentary about the project - highly recommended!Also kicking off the Miles centenary celebrations this month with the Birth of the Birth of the Cool - the 1948 Miles Davis Tuba Band concerts that preceded Miles legendary collaboration with Gil Evans and others. Sheila Jordan's Celebration of Life took place earlier this week on what would have been her 97th birthday. We'll hear the full second set of her duo with Cameron Brown at Ironworks from March of 2017 along with a number of other iconic performances.
