Just some musical fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, lotsa birthdays with nods to Duke's last week (an extended 1949 arrangement of the theme with the orchestra gets us going), Ambrose Akinmusire, Shirley Horn, the late Carlos Ward, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, James Newton and an oblique recognition of the centenary last week of Chicago impresario Joe Segal whose Jazz Showcase archives are being mined by Zev Feldman for a series of Record Store Day releases. Today's feature is a tremendous Yusef Lateef quartet which includes Kenny Barron from 1975 - Alight upon the Lake! A preview of the new project Goodbye Strawberry Hill from Sharon Minemoto that tells her family's story from the incarceration and separation of her family and the Canadians of Japanese heritage in the Second World War to their resilience and optimism of the present day. Her quartet's performance at the Anvil Theatre in New West tomorrow evening (May 2nd) will also feature a screening of a short documentary about the project - highly recommended!Also kicking off the Miles centenary celebrations this month with the Birth of the Birth of the Cool - the 1948 Miles Davis Tuba Band concerts that preceded Miles legendary collaboration with Gil Evans and others. It's somehow ironic that Women get shortchanged again with a 23 hour International Women's Day!Celebrating the music of great Jazz Women on this afternoon's International Women's Day edition of The A-Trane Radio Program - of course, we celebrate great music by Women all year but it's always fun to take a theme and to run with it to hear some great music. In previous years, I've mixed contemporary and historical recordings by Women but we're mainly concentrating on currently active practitioners today and recent releases wherever possible!We'll hear music from Anais Reno who takes in the theme, Alice Coltrane, Alina Bzhezhinska, Lakecia Benjamin, Nala Sinephro with Nubya Garcia, Chelsea Carmichael, Brandee Younger with Courtney Bryant, and Muriel Grossman. Building tributes to three great musicians around live performances on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! The legendary Coleman Hawkins celebrates his birthday today and we'll hear a number of live performances including the 1940 performance of Body and Soul from the Savory Collection. Sheila Jordan's Celebration of Life took place earlier this week on what would have been her 97th birthday. We'll hear the full second set of her duo with Cameron Brown at Ironworks from March of 2017 along with a number of other iconic performances. Finally we'll hear Jack DeJohnette with his Special Edition at the Edmonton Jazz City Festival in 1980 with a short interview conducted by the late Gavin Walker along with some other favourite JD recordings.We'll also have time for some other recent birthdays - the theme from David Amram who turned 95 earlier this week, Aretha Tillotson with a new release featuring the Jensen sisters and centenaries for June Christy (Something Cool!) and (today) Sal Salvador!
