| 11/29/24 | ![]() Black Branch Trail - Dahlonega, GA. | This hike occurred on November 27, 2024. It was the day before my 58th birthday. The Black Branch Trail is rated as easy on Alltrails and the trail fits the description. There are a couple of mild inclines but the trail itself is flat mostly smooth and wide. There is one small stream crossing but other than that there are no other scenic views or things to see. It is, however, a really pleasant walk in the woods and if you have an older dog like I do it should be the perfect outing. | 9/10/24 | ![]() Dog Lake & Pipeline Trail at Millcreek Canyon in Salt Lake City, UT | September always feels like the perfect time to hike, especially in Mill Creek Canyon, Salt Lake City, where on odd-numbered days, dogs can roam off-leash. Over the past week, Godfrey and I took on two trails: on September 3rd we did the more strenuous Dog Lake hike, followed by a gentler hike along the Mount Olympus Pipeline Trail on September 5th. These hikes not only gave me the chance to soak in the beauty of the area but also some time to reflect on how I’ve adjusted to the challenges of both age and maintaining Godfrey’s health. | 6/7/24 | ![]() Shoals Falls at Walden Creek - Dahlonega, GA | Godfrey and I started out about 9:30 am. About a half hour later than I wanted because of traffic on the way. This will teach me to leave the house earlier in the summer months. The weather was cool, in the 70s but it was pretty humid with dew points in the mid 60s. It also rained on us a couple of times but it was fairly light and honestly a welcome event because of the humidity. The trail is rated easy and rightfully so. It's also short. But worth it when you get to the falls. It's a wide trail that looks like it's more used for ATVs or dirt bikes. There are two waterfalls at the end of this trail. It takes some minor scrambling to get up to one and down to the other. It's perfect for bringing your dog though. Even my 9 year old Labrador, Godfrey, had no trouble getting up and down to the falls. Start sending sats directly to the artists as you listen with these podcast apps. | 5/3/24 | ![]() Canada Creek Falls - Suches, GA - 2024-05-02 | It was another beautiful mid-spring day with bright sun and temps in the 60s. Godfrey and I started out the hike around 9:30 am. | 12/15/23 | ![]() 2023-12-14 - Watson Mill Bridge State Park, Comer, GA. | The audio for today's podcast is cut off. Like an idiot I didn't bring extra batteries for my recorder and the battery died 17 minutes in. So, unfortunately, you won't be subjected to my incessant prattle. I decided to post what I have anyway. See the pics and watch the YouTube video below for more of my hike. Watson Mill Bridge is the longest covered bridge in the State of Georgia. When I saw pictures of it on Alltrails and found it was less than 90 minutes from my house I knew I had to go out there and check it out. Godfrey and I took that opportunity to get in a little over 3 miles of hiking as well. The trails at Watson Mill Bridge State Park are rated easy. But that doesn't mean they're not enjoyable. On the Watson Mill Bridge State Park Loop there are little signs with information about the plant and animal life in the area as well as some info on wildfires. There are benches along the trail for people to sit and admire this dense pine forest When we started out it was about 40 degrees and was in the mid-40s by the time we were done. On a beautiful sunny fall day there was no need for a jacket. We hiked two trails, the State Park Loop and Watson Mill Ridge Loop. Godfrey got some swimming in and we took some nice pics by the bridge. Start sending sats directly to the artists as you listen with these podcast apps. | 11/28/23 | ![]() 2023-11-28 57th Birthday Hike to Montgomery Falls | I went for a hike to Montgomery Falls with my dog Godfrey for my 57th birthday. The hike to the falls is a little short so we extended it a little by going a half mile or so past the falls to another creek crossing. In all we did a little less than four miles and had to do some scrambling up and down an embankment to see the falls. Nothing too strenuous on an absolutely beautiful fall day. | 6/17/23 | ![]() 2023-06-13 Dead Man's Branch to Contentment Falls and Trestle Trail | We had a great hike today. We went roughly 6 miles, saw a beautiful waterfall, a pretty cool train trestle (I annoyingly keep saying trellis in the video & audio because I couldn't think of the word while recording), and got off track a couple times. To start I couldn't find the trail head. The trail head is located behind a nature center at the end of the Toccoa Falls parking lot. The trail head is not marked. There is a sign board at the head but with nothing on the sign. I used the Alltrails app with the map I downloaded to walk around until I found that elusive trail head. There are several water crossings and most are small and easy but you may get your feet wet on at least two of them. Dead Man's Branch is a straight forward trail with mild inclines. It's a bit rocky in spots with those rocks covered in moss and could be slippery when they're wet. Some of the trail is also a little narrow but certainly not too narrow. After getting to the end of Dead Man's Branch I headed over to the trail that leads to Contentment Falls. It's just down the road about 50 yards or so. That trail is not just for hiking it's also used for off-roading and ATVs. It's a pretty wide trail until you get to Contentment Falls. The falls are very cool and I failed to capture how nice it really was in my pictures. Sometimes I get bogged down with paying attention to my dog Godfrey and lose sight of capturing the scene. After the falls I continued down the trail that connects with the Trestle Trail Loop. I found this part of the trail hard to follow. I lost the trail several times but was able to stay moving in the right direction using the Alltrails map that I downloaded ahead of time. After reaching the trestle I had no problem following the rest of the trail. Never pass up a chance to take a hike in June in Georgia when the temperatures are staying in the upper 70s and lower 80s. It doesn't get more pleasant than that. Here's a link to the trail head location. https://goo.gl/maps/kGD3eigHKmygD3Au8 | 39m 53s | ||||||
| 5/13/23 | ![]() Rhododendron Trail to Chenocetah Memorial Tower, May 11, 2023 | It’s been a bit since I went out hiking. Sometimes life gets in the way. I regularly get out and walk around my neighborhood with my dog Godfrey but I’d rather hike out in the forests and mountains of North Georgia. Today we took a short hike of about 3.5 miles from the trailhead to the Chenocetah Memorial Tower and back. It was an easy trail until just before the tower where there is a pretty steep incline. But the trail is suitable for everyone I think. Just take your time on the incline and you’ll be fine. There were two nice small waterfalls along the way with side trails to access them. I only saw only one other hiker with his dog on the trail. The trail starts at a small pull-off on the road. Follow the AllTrails app directions to the trailhead. It’s accurate and you may miss it driving by. There’s space for 2 cars at the pull-off. There is other parking but you’ll have to walk up the road a bit to get to the trailhead and there is a suggest $5 parking fee. YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2xTq0A_pBg | 30m 10s | ||||||
