Last week, our narrator journeyed to Innsmouth, a town in Massachusetts that had been shunned and shrouded in mystery. Apparently, a plague wiped out half the population of the town years ago. And the natives there look different. Last week, the town drunk was telling what he knew about Captain Obed and the strange dealings he had with creatures that would surface out by Devil Reef. The Cthulhu reading in particular packed the room, and people were turned away. We gave out a hundred "Cthulhu Comforters", which were little rubber fidget toys shaped like an octopus that kind of popped. I told everyone I gave one out to that it was a scary story, so if they need it, they can fidget with the Cthulhu to help the calm down. When the story got intense at the end, I heard people popping their toys in the audience. It was really, really fun. And now for something completely different. Thurnley Abbey was originally released in McClure's magazine in October 1908. It is the most famous piece of fiction by Perceval Landon, who was a journalist by profession. However, though it is a "one off", it's considered one of the most terrifying stories by ghost story buffs. I hope you like it. | 9/25/26 | Ep. 1177, Aesop's Fables, Part One | How can ancient, anthropomorphized animals possibly be relevant today? Aesop's Fables, today on The Classic Tales Podcast. Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast, where an audiobook approach delivers an immersive experience in classic literature. I'm your host BJ Harrison. I'm glad you could join us. Unlimited everything. With a monthly donation of $9.99 or more, that's what you get. Unlimited access to everything I've recorded for the last 19 years. These are the same titles found on Audible, Spotify, and elsewhere. Go to classictalesaudiobooks.com today and choose the best way to support the show. Thank you so much. Today's episode features an author I've wanted to do since I started this show nearly 20 years ago. I just couldn't figure out how to work Aesop into the lineup. There are so many different translations and editions, I simply never found the right one. Then, as I was researching Somerset Maugham, I ran across a reference to the title of one of his books, Cakes and Ale. Maugham's Cakes and Ale is a novel exposing the wrongs of societal snobbery. Maugham lifted his title from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, it seems. Maugham's novel may have its title inspired from Joseph Jacob's edition of Aesop's Fables, as the moral of the story of the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse is: Better Beans and Bacon in peace than Cakes and Ale in fear. Something about that just struck a chord with me. I found the Jacob edition of the fables, and they are fantastic, as you will soon hear. I had toyed around many times with adding one or two to the beginning and end of a show, but I didn't think that would give them the attention due to them. Which brings us to today's episode, where we dive in and hear 22 of Aesop's Fables, one after another. As you listen, you might want to check in on how you're feeling. If you're like me, at first I was a little resistive – these feel like kids stories at first. Peter Pan advice, right? Keep listening. See how you feel by the end of the episode. You may realize you want to start it over. If you had to look up the word mezzotint like I did, here's what you'd find at Merriam-Webster: 1: a manner of engraving on copper or steel by scraping or burnishing a roughened surface to produce light and shade 2: an engraving produced by mezzotint Today's story has been anthologized and dramatized many times. So if you're in the area, and are planning on attending, please come and say hi. There's also a super fun interview I had with Heather Ordover from CraftLit, the annotated audiobook podcast, that you can check out. Her podcast turns 20 this year, and since many of her listeners have heard my work, since she's used some of my recordings in her show, she was gracious enough to have a chat with me. If you wonder why I do this, or what my story is, it's a great snapshot of lil' ol' me. A link to the interview can be found in the show notes.
