In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris continues the five-part NEW STEEL series with one of the most important lessons for anyone recovering from hip replacement surgery: recovery is built one small win at a time. After hip replacement surgery, many patients wait for the big moment — walking without pain, returning to golf, yoga, travel, work, exercise, or finally feeling “normal” again. But hip replacement recovery usually begins much smaller. Standing for the first time. Taking a few careful steps with a walker. Getting to the restroom. Sleeping a little better. Doing physical therapy exercises. Walking with better posture. Asking for help. Resting instead of overdoing it. Chris shares why small wins matter so much after hip replacement, how comparison can damage confidence, and why every recovery timeline is different. Hip surgery recovery is not linear, and patients may have good days, frustrating days, soreness, fatigue, setbacks, and slow progress — all while still healing. This episode is encouragement for hip replacement patients who feel behind, frustrated, impatient, or unsure if they are making progress. Recovery takes time, consistency, patience, medical guidance, and trust. One small win at a time, confidence returns, strength builds, independence grows, and life starts expanding again. New hips. In Episode 52 of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris continues the 5-part NEW STEEL series with Theme 2: fear of hip replacement surgery. If you are preparing for a total hip replacement, worried about hip replacement recovery, or wondering what life after hip replacement will look like, this episode is for you. Chris talks honestly about the fear before surgery — fear of the procedure, fear of recovery, fear of complications, and the deeper fear many hip replacement patients feel: “What if I’m never the same again?” He shares what it felt like before his first hip replacement, why fear is completely normal, and how a bigger reason — family, independence, mobility, work, travel, or simply wanting your life back — can help you move forward. This episode is not about pretending hip replacement surgery is easy. It's about getting informed, asking better questions, preparing for recovery, trusting your medical team, doing the work after surgery, and remembering that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward because something else matters more. Whether you are facing hip replacement surgery, recovering from a total hip replacement, or supporting someone through the process, this episode offers encouragement, perspective, and a reminder that you are not alone. Hip replacement, hip replacement recovery, hip surgery, life after hip replacement, hip pain, joint replacement, and active life after hip replacement are all part of this first episode in a special five-part New Steel series. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris talks about one of the most important themes from his book, New Steel: there is life after hip replacement. When you are living with serious hip pain, osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, or preparing for hip replacement surgery, your world can start to shrink. You may stop walking, golfing, traveling, exercising, seeing friends, playing with kids or grandkids, or saying yes to things you used to enjoy. But hip replacement surgery does not have to be the end of your active, fulfilling life. It may be the start of rebuilding your confidence, mobility, strength, independence, and hope. Chris shares his own experience with hip pain, two hip replacement surgeries, recovery, and eventually returning to a bigger life. This episode is not about convincing anyone to do an IRONMAN triathlon. It is about reminding hip replacement patients that recovery is real, progress takes time, and your current pain does not have to become your permanent identity. If you are facing hip surgery, early in hip replacement recovery, or wondering what life can look like after hip replacement, this episode offers encouragement, connection, and a reminder that better days can still be ahead. Can You Ride Water Slides After Hip Replacement Surgery? Can hip replacement patients still enjoy waterparks, resorts, cruise ship water slides, pools, lazy rivers, and active summer vacations? In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris talks about one of the more fun — and surprisingly practical — questions many active hip replacement patients may wonder about: Are water slides safe after hip replacement surgery? Summer, warm weather, family vacations, waterparks, resorts, and cruise ships can bring great opportunities to move, play, cool off, make memories, and enjoy life after hip replacement. But water slides also bring real things to consider, including twisting, bending, awkward body positions, slippery surfaces, stairs, shallow splashdowns, fatigue, strength, balance, and how long it has been since surgery. Chris shares his own love of water slides, why he believes fun still matters after hip replacement, and the one time a water slide created an unexpected wardrobe emergency. More importantly, he walks through 10 things hip replacement patients should consider before going on water slides, including getting cleared by your surgeon, knowing your stage of recovery, avoiding risky positions, paying attention to the landing area, starting with easier slides, checking ride rules, watching out for wet stairs and slippery walkways, and having an exit plan at the bottom. This episode is not about scaring people away from waterparks. It is about helping hip replacement patients think clearly, make better decisions, and stay active in a way that fits their current recovery, strength, mobility, and confidence. Whether you are recovering from hip replacement surgery, years removed from total hip replacement, planning a summer vacation after hip surgery, wondering about water activities after hip replacement, or trying to return to a more active lifestyle with a new hip, this episode offers practical tips, encouragement, and a bigger reminder: life after hip replacement can still include adventure, movement, laughter, family memories, and yes, maybe even water slides. After a hip replacement, the question is not just whether you can go on water slides. The better question is whether that specific slide, on that specific day, with your current strength and recovery, feels like the right choice for you. New hips. New you. Let’s go. | 5/9/26 | ![]() Ice Skating After a Hip Replacement - Ep. 48 | Ice Skating After Hip Replacement ►► Download my Top 12 Tips for Hip Replacement Patients here Get my book, NEW STEEL here - available in hardcover, paperback, eBook and audio versions For more information, or to send a question or comment, visit The Hip Replacement Podcast website Can You Ice Skate After Hip Replacement Surgery? Hip replacement recovery, ice skating after hip replacement, and why your old activities may not be as “over” as you think. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris shares a personal story about getting back on the ice years after hip replacement surgery. After his daughters started taking ice skating lessons in Central Florida, Chris agreed to take them skating — even though, as every hip replacement patient knows, ice is slippery, falls are scary, and confidence after hip surgery does not always come rushing back immediately. This episode is not a recommendation that every hip replacement patient should go ice skating. Instead, it is a real-life reminder that hip replacement recovery is not only about walking, rehab exercises, physical therapy, or getting through the early weeks after surgery. It is also about asking a bigger question: What parts of your active life do you still want to return to when your body is ready? Chris talks about his long history with ice skating and hockey, from growing up playing hockey in the Chicago area to working as a rink guard and playing late-night hockey at outdoor and indoor rinks in Houston. That background mattered. He was not learning to skate for the first time after hip replacement. He had years of skating experience, which helped him manage the risk, take it slow, avoid crowds, stay aware of his balance, and enjoy time with his daughters. The bigger lesson is for anyone preparing for hip replacement surgery or living years after hip replacement: do not be too quick to throw away the equipment, identity, or activities you think you may never need again. You may return to golf, tennis, hiking, cycling, skating, dancing, fitness classes, or another activity you once loved — maybe at a different pace, a gentler level, or for a completely new reason. Hip replacement surgery can feel like the end of certain activities, but for many people, it may become the beginning of a smarter, more intentional active life. Your recovery timeline is personal. Your risks are personal. Your return to activity should be discussed with your doctor or physical therapist. But your future may be bigger than you think. If you are a hip replacement patient, preparing for hip surgery, recovering from total hip replacement, or wondering what life after hip replacement can look like, this episode offers encouragement, perspective, and a little ice-rink reality check. | 5/2/26 | ![]() Tax Accounts and Hip Replacements - Ep. 47 | Hip Replacement Costs, HSA Benefits, FSA Rules, and Medical Expense Tax Tips ►► Download my Top 12 Tips for Hip Replacement Patients here Get my book, NEW STEEL here - available in hardcover, paperback, eBook and audio versions For more information, or to send a question or comment, visit The Hip Replacement Podcast website Tax Accounts that Can Benefit Hip Replacement Patients How Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts Can Help Hip Replacement Patients Tax Benefits of a Health Savings Account (HSA) After Hip Replacement Hip replacement surgery can come with more than physical recovery. It can also bring medical bills, recovery equipment, physical therapy costs, prescriptions, mobility tools, and other expenses that add up quickly. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris talks about how hip replacement patients in the United States may be able to use tax-advantaged accounts like a Health Savings Account, also known as an HSA, or a Flexible Spending Account, also known as an FSA, to help pay for qualifying medical expenses connected to hip replacement surgery and recovery. If you are preparing for hip replacement surgery, recovering from hip surgery, or years removed from surgery and still managing recovery-related expenses, this episode explains why your situation may qualify you for certain tax benefits. Chris shares how an HSA or FSA may help pay for medical expenses such as crutches, walkers, canes, prescriptions, pain medication, physical therapy, raised toilet seats, shower chairs, ice machines, compression boots, compression stockings, orthotics, shoe inserts, and other recovery tools. This episode also explains the important differences between an HSA and an FSA. A flexible spending account is usually set up through an employer and generally follows a “use it or lose it” rule during the plan year. A health savings account is different because it can roll over from year to year, may be used long after the original medical expense was incurred, and can even become a powerful long-term planning tool for future healthcare costs. Chris also discusses why hip replacement surgery may change the definition of what counts as a medical expense for you. Something that might not qualify for one person could potentially qualify for someone recovering from major hip surgery if it is medically necessary and supported by proper documentation. That is why keeping receipts, asking your doctor or surgeon about a letter of medical necessity, and speaking with a tax advisor can be so important. This is not tax advice, but it is a practical reminder: if you qualify for tax benefits, use them. Hip replacement recovery is already challenging enough. If an HSA, FSA, or other tax-advantaged account can help reduce the financial pressure of hip replacement surgery, recovery equipment, physical therapy, or long-term medical care, it is worth understanding your options. Hip Replacement, Bigger Goals Can Your Hip Replacement Support Bigger Fitness and Life Goals? Are hip replacements strong? Hip replacement recovery can lead to bigger goals, stronger movement, and a new version of what’s possible. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris shares a personal story about returning to competitive golf years after hip replacement surgery and asking an important question: Can your hip hold up to your big goals? After two hip replacements and years of rebuilding strength, mobility, confidence, and endurance, Chris recently traveled to Tennessee to compete in a qualifier for the Senior U.S. Open. He did not advance, but that was not the real victory. The bigger win was discovering that his hips were not the limiting factor. After walking more than eight miles on a hilly golf course, playing three rounds of golf in four days, and competing around high-level golfers, his hips held up. For anyone preparing for hip replacement surgery, recovering from hip replacement surgery, or wondering what life after hip replacement can look like, this episode is about hope, patience, and possibility. Hip replacement recovery is not just about walking again. It can be about returning to activities you love, setting bigger goals, building strength, improving mobility, and getting back to a more active life. Chris talks about how hip pain, hip surgery, and recovery can interrupt your life, your identity, and your goals. But he also reminds listeners that the interruption does not have to become the end of the story. Whether your goal is golf, hiking, cycling, swimming, pickleball, traveling, fitness, endurance sports, or simply living with more confidence, your hip replacement does not have to define your limits forever. This episode also explores why competitive goals can reveal what you need to work on. Without pressure, it can be hard to see where your strength, flexibility, endurance, mindset, and preparation need improvement. For Chris, the golf tournament showed him that his hips were ready, but the rest of his body needed better conditioning, stretching, and golf endurance. If you are a hip replacement patient, future hip replacement patient, or someone supporting a loved one through hip surgery recovery, this episode will encourage you to think beyond the early recovery phase. The first weeks and months matter, but they are not the whole journey. With time, physical therapy, smart exercise, strength training, patience, and consistency, you may be able to put hip surgery behind you and pursue goals that once felt out of reach. Your hip replacement may be part of your story, but it does not have to be the ceiling on your life. New hips. New you. Let’s go. In this episode, Chris reflects on the 11-year anniversary of one of his hip replacements and shares why that milestone matters so much for anyone facing hip replacement surgery, going through early recovery, or wondering what life after hip replacement can really look like. Most people focus on the short term: getting through surgery, using a walker, reducing pain, returning to driving, finishing physical therapy, and hoping they will feel normal again. But this episode zooms out and asks a more powerful question: What can your life look like 10 or 11 years after hip replacement? Chris talks honestly about the uncertainty, fear, patience, and hope that come with hip replacement recovery. He shares how difficult it can be when you are stuck in the early days and weeks after surgery, when everything feels slow, uncomfortable, and uncertain. He also explains why long-term perspective matters so much, especially for people who are wondering whether they will ever fully trust their new hip, move well again, or enjoy an active life. This episode is also about something bigger than surgery. It is about getting your life back. Chris explains why recovery is only the beginning, why a replaced hip should not make you timid, and why movement, exercise, stretching, physical therapy habits, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle still matter years later. He also discusses the reality of occasional aches, tightness, soreness, and questions that can still come up over time — and why those moments do not automatically mean something is wrong. Most importantly, this episode offers hope. If you are only days, weeks, or months into your recovery, or if you are nervous about surgery, this conversation is a reminder that hip replacement is not the end of an active life. It can be the beginning of a stronger, more confident, more active chapter. Eleven years later, the message is clear: be patient, do the work, keep moving, and build a bigger life on the other side of surgery. New hips. New you. Let’s go. As Chris trains for an ambitious golf goal — attempting to qualify for the US Open and US Senior Open — he is forced to build more endurance, walk longer distances, and recover smarter. Along the way, he discovers something that many hip replacement patients, joint replacement patients, and active adults need to hear: the surface you choose matters. If you’ve ever wondered why your hips feel stiff, your legs ache, or your body feels beaten up after a long walk, this episode may explain why. Chris compares walking on grass vs pavement, concrete vs softer surfaces, and why choosing the right environment may help you walk farther, recover faster, and stay more active with less pain and discomfort. This episode is especially helpful for people focused on hip replacement recovery, walking endurance, returning to activity after hip replacement, golf after hip replacement, or even running after hip replacement. Chris talks about gradually increasing distance, avoiding unnecessary pounding on hard surfaces, and finding smarter ways to stay active without feeling wrecked afterward. Cycling after hip replacement: when can you ride a bike, what risks matter, and how do you return safely and confidently? Cycling after hip replacement, bike riding after hip replacement surgery, hip replacement recovery, stationary bike after hip replacement, outdoor biking after hip replacement, and returning to exercise after hip surgery are questions many patients ask as they start feeling better and want their life back. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris tackles one of the most common recovery questions: Can hip replacement patients ride a bike after surgery? The answer for many people is yes—but only if they think beyond whether the new hip can pedal in a circle and focus on whether they can ride safely, confidently, and without creating a setback. Chris shares his own connection to cycling, including how it was one of the few activities he could still do before surgery without as much hip pain, and why biking can feel like freedom during recovery. This episode breaks down the real-world factors that matter when getting back on a bike after a total hip replacement: mounting and dismounting, hip mobility, fear of falling, balance, timing, strength, pain, swelling, bike setup, seat height, saddle comfort, and whether you are riding a stationary bike or heading outside on the road or trail. He also explains why a stationary bike is often the safer place to start and why outdoor cycling requires a completely different level of control, awareness, and confidence. This episode also covers the difference between short, easy rides and longer or more demanding efforts, including hills, gravel, clip-in pedals, crowded paths, group rides, and unpredictable riders around you. Chris talks about why even if you feel good during a ride, you still need to think about how your body may respond later that day and over the next few days. For hip replacement patients eager to return to cycling, this is a practical conversation about patience, judgment, progression, and respecting the recovery process instead of rushing it. If you are wondering when you can ride a bike after hip replacement surgery, whether a stationary bike is safe after hip replacement, how to return to cycling after hip surgery, or what precautions matter most, this episode gives you a smart framework. It is not just about getting back on the bike. It is about getting back on the bike in a way that supports hip replacement recovery, rebuilds confidence, and helps you move forward. New hips. | 4/5/26 | Varying Rates of Recovery - Ep. 42 | Hip Replacement Recovery Timelines and Schedules Differ Hip Replacement Recovery Is Not a Race—Stop Comparing Your Timeline and Recovery Speed ►► Download my Top 12 Tips for Hip Replacement Patients here Get my book, NEW STEEL here - available in hardcover, paperback, eBook and audio versions For more information, or to send a question or comment, visit The Hip Replacement Podcast website Varying Rates of Recovery After Hip Replacement Why Hip Replacement Recovery Looks Different for Everyone Hip replacement recovery, hip replacement surgery recovery, recovery timeline, hip surgery recovery, and comparing recovery after surgery—this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast tackles one of the biggest mental and emotional traps patients fall into: comparing their recovery to someone else’s. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why am I not walking better yet?” “Why am I still stiff?” or “Why does someone else seem ahead of me after hip replacement surgery?” this episode is for you. Chris explains why recovery after hip replacement surgery is never identical from person to person, and why even your own hip replacement recovery timeline can speed up, slow down, stall, or surge depending on the phase you are in. In this episode, Chris breaks down the many factors that affect hip replacement recovery, including age, strength, fitness level, overall health, pain tolerance, surgical differences, complications, rehab consistency, mindset, expectations, sleep, swelling, inflammation, activity level, and the very real danger of the comparison trap. Just because someone says they were golfing quickly, walking without a cane early, or “back to normal” fast does not mean your hip surgery recovery should look the same. This episode also explains something many people miss: your recovery can vary within your own journey. You may improve quickly in one phase, then hit stiffness, fatigue, soreness, poor sleep, or mental frustration later. You may walk better before you sleep better. You may feel stronger before you feel mentally normal again. That does not mean something is wrong. It means recovery from hip replacement is uneven, personal, and influenced by many moving parts. Chris also makes the case that recovery does not simply end after 3 months or even 1 year. Instead, recovery often becomes maintenance. If you want long-term success after hip replacement surgery, mobility, strength, stretching, exercise, and consistency still matter. If you are feeling discouraged, frustrated, or behind in your hip replacement recovery timeline, this episode will help you stop measuring your progress against other people and start focusing on your next step, your consistency, and your own long-term gains. Because your recovery is your recovery—and that is exactly how it should be. New hips. New you. Let’s go. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris tackles one of the biggest challenges after hip replacement surgery: how to stay active, hopeful, and mentally engaged without feeling limited to walking, basic rehab, or the same two or three activities every week. If you are asking what comes next after hip surgery recovery, this episode is your reminder that life after hip replacement can be bigger, more fun, and far more interesting than most people expect. Chris explains why hip replacement recovery is not just about surviving surgery or getting back to baseline. It is about building strength, improving balance, protecting your new hip, expanding confidence, and creating a more active life. This episode explores the idea of mixing physical activity, social activity, and mental activity so that exercise after hip replacement becomes more sustainable and a lot less boring. Instead of only focusing on walking, Chris shares a wide range of activities after hip replacement that may help you feel alive again, including jump rope, hula hooping, yoga, ballet fitness, Tai Chi, dance classes, drumming, water aerobics, paddle boarding, rowing, rebounder workouts, gardening, pickleball, volunteering, acting classes, choir, indoor climbing, circus arts basics, cooking classes, travel, and adult sports leagues. Along the way, Chris also talks about practical guardrails for hip replacement exercise, including starting small, respecting your surgical history, thinking about balance and fall risk, being careful with deep forced positions and quick pivoting, and using your surgeon’s guidance as part of the decision-making process. The message is not to be reckless. The message is to stop assuming that after hip replacement surgery your world has to get smaller. Whether you are preparing for surgery, early in hip replacement recovery, or years into life after hip replacement, this episode will challenge you to ask a better question than, “What exercise should I do?” The better question is: What kind of life do I want to build after hip replacement? If you want more confidence, more movement, more variety, and more fun after hip replacement surgery, this episode will help you rethink what is possible. New hips. New you. Let’s go. If you’ve already had hip replacement surgery or you’re worried your other hip may eventually need attention, this episode is for you. Chris breaks down the physical, mental, and practical differences between recovering from one artificial hip and living with two hip replacements. He explains why a second hip replacement is not just a repeat of the first surgery, and why the recovery experience can feel more complex than people expect. In this episode, you’ll hear Chris discuss why some patients may eventually need a second hip replacement, how compensation patterns can overload the non-operated side, and why hip replacement recovery after the second surgery may involve different balance, coordination, symmetry, and mobility challenges. Chris talks about fear before surgery, time between surgeries, whether to use the same surgeon and same surgical approach, and how physical therapy, stretching, walking aids, and long-term recovery habits can make a major difference. Chris also shares personal insight on issues many patients are not warned enough about, including leg length discrepancy, balance issues, altered gait, coordination changes, and protecting both hips during recovery. Whether you’re preparing for your first procedure, considering a second hip replacement surgery, or wondering about double hip replacement recovery, this episode offers honest perspective, practical advice, and encouragement. If hip pain is limiting your lifestyle, movement, confidence, sleep, exercise, golf, walking, or daily activities, this conversation will help you think more clearly about what happens when one surgery becomes two — and how to recover smarter, move better, and live bigger after total hip replacement. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris talks about what it’s really like to deal with sleep years after a hip replacement, including stiffness, side sleeping, hip tightness, mattress issues, sleeping positions, stretching, and discomfort around the hip long after surgery. Many people assume that once they recover from hip replacement surgery, sleep should go completely back to normal. But even one year, five years, or ten years after surgery, some patients still notice hip stiffness, tightness in the front of the hips, soreness in surrounding muscles and tissue, or discomfort tied to how they sleep. This episode explains why that happens and what to consider before assuming something is seriously wrong. Chris shares his own experience as a double hip replacement patient and explains how sleep position after hip replacement can affect the way the body feels the next morning. He discusses sleeping on the back, stomach, and side, how pillows can make a big difference, and why the issue may not be the hip joint itself but the muscles, soft tissue, lower back, and surrounding areas. He also talks about how mattress firmness, stretching before bed, activity level during the day, and even food, caffeine, sugar, or alcohol may affect sleep quality after hip replacement. If you’ve ever wondered why your hip feels stiff in the morning, whether side sleeping is causing discomfort, or how to improve sleep after hip replacement surgery, this episode offers practical ideas you can try right away. | 2/26/26 | Simplicity and Consistency - Ep. 38 | Hip Replacement Recovery: How to Make Progress (Even When You Feel Stuck) ►►Receive my Top 12 Tips for Hip Replacement Patients here Get my book, NEW STEEL here – available in Hardcover, Paperback, eBook and Audio versions See The Hip Replacement Podcast site for more details Hip Replacement Recovery Progress Feels Slow? Use Simplicity + Consistency to Get Stronger, Healthier, and More Confident. Progress After Hip Replacement Surgery: Simple Daily Habits for Less Pain + Better Mobility If you’ve had a hip replacement, you already know this truth: hip replacement recovery can feel unpredictable. Some days you feel strong and hopeful—then the next day you’re stiff, sore, frustrated, and wondering if you’ll ever be truly pain-free after hip replacement. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris talks directly to that “stuck” feeling and gives you a simple, repeatable approach to make real progress after hip replacement surgery—whether you’re days, weeks, months, or years into recovery. This episode is built around two principles that drive lasting results: simplicity and consistency. Not perfection. Not a complicated program. Not an unrealistic “miracle recovery” you see on social media. Just the daily actions that actually improve mobility, reduce hip stiffness, rebuild strength, and restore confidence. You’ll learn a practical 4-step process you can start today: Reset the story — overwhelm isn’t a verdict and your recovery isn’t “over” because you hit a rough patch. Commit to the minimum dose — choose 10–15 minutes a day of walking, physical therapy exercises, gentle mobility, or basic strength work. Chip away at progress — stack small wins: fewer limps, better sleep, longer walks, less stiffness. Protect your environment — upgrade your inputs: your thoughts, the people around you, and what you repeatedly tell yourself. If you’re searching for hip replacement recovery tips, motivation to stay consistent, or a simple plan to keep moving forward—this episode will help you feel back in control. | 2/21/26 | Nutrition Your Body Needs Before and After Surgery - Replay with Dr. Osborne - Ep. 37 | Thank you to Dr. Osborne for permitting us to replay his video. Dr. Osborne YouTube Video - Why Malnutrition Causes Failed Surgeries (And How to Fix It) Dr. Osborne website Hip replacement surgery recovery starts before the operation: nutrition, protein, and supplements can make or break your healing. Hip Replacement Recovery Nutrition: What to Eat (and Test) Before & After Surgery | Dr. Osborne Supplements & Protein for Surgery Recovery: Reduce Infection Risk and Heal Faster (Replay w/ Dr. Osborne with permission) If you’re preparing for hip replacement, recovering from hip replacement surgery, or working to improve your hip replacement recovery months (or years) later, Episode 37 of The Hip Replacement Podcast is a must-listen. Chris Bystriansky replays a full teaching from Dr. Osborne (with permission) on nutrition before surgery and nutrition after surgery—because the “hard part” isn’t just the procedure… it’s the recovery that follows. In a replay from Dr. Osborne’s video, he explains why many surgical patients are malnourished (even if they don’t look it), and how that can increase the risk of infections, complications, slow wound healing, longer hospital stays, and poor outcomes—especially for joint replacement and orthopedic surgery patients. You’ll hear exactly what to ask your surgeon for, including key lab tests before surgery (CBC, chemistry panel, albumin, iron/ferritin, HS-CRP, vitamin D, and intracellular nutrient analysis), plus the real-world reason many people never get proper nutrition guidance in pre-op planning. Dr. Osborne also breaks down practical strategies for better surgery recovery: why protein for healing is foundational, how amino acids (like arginine and glutamine) support tissue repair, circulation, immune function, and gut health, and how common medications used around surgery (antibiotics, NSAIDs, steroids, anesthesia, opioids) can impact nutrients and digestion. If you want a smarter, more proactive plan for healing after surgery, this episode gives you the language—and the leverage—to have the right conversation with your healthcare team. | 2/15/26 | What is VO2 Max and Why Hip Replacement Patients Should Care - Ep. 36 | VO2 Max After Hip Replacement: How to Improve Aerobic Fitness, Endurance, and Longevity Hip Replacement Recovery Fitness: VO2 Max, Heart Health, and Safe Cardio Training VO2 Max for Hip Replacement Recovery: Boost Heart Health, Endurance, and Longevity VO2 max (your aerobic capacity) might be the most overlooked “vital sign” for people preparing for hip replacement surgery, recovering from hip replacement, or trying to thrive in life after hip replacement. In Episode 36 of The Hip Replacement Podcast, host Chris Bystriansky breaks down VO2 max in plain English—what it is, why it matters for cardiovascular fitness, and how to improve it safely so you can walk farther, climb stairs easier, and build real-world stamina. You’ll learn how VO2 max relates to how efficiently your lungs pull oxygen from the air and how your heart delivers oxygen-rich blood to your muscles and brain. Chris explains why higher VO2 max is strongly tied to better heart health, lung capacity, energy levels, recovery, and overall longevity—plus why low aerobic fitness can make everyday tasks (like housework, shopping, or a short flight of stairs) feel harder than they should. This episode is especially useful for hip replacement patients who want practical guidance on exercise after hip replacement and hip replacement recovery without getting lost in complicated training plans. Chris covers how VO2 max can be measured in a lab, but also how many people track trends using a smartwatch or fitness tracker—and why consistency matters more than “perfect accuracy” when you’re rebuilding strength and endurance. You’ll also get simple, beginner-friendly ways to increase VO2 max after hip replacement (or while you’re preparing for hip surgery): easy interval training ideas you can do during a walk, how to alternate steady-state cardio with short bursts of higher effort, and how to scale intensity so it’s appropriate for your current fitness and recovery stage. If running isn’t on your menu yet or never will be, Chris talks through options like cycling, swimming, and other low-impact cardio that can support hip arthroplasty rehab. Finally, Chris shares breathing strategies that can help when pain, mobility limits, weather, or a busy schedule make workouts tough—plus a reminder that small improvements in aerobic fitness can support circulation, healing, and inflammation control over time. As always, this episode is education and encouragement—not medical advice. If you’re looking for a clearer understanding of VO2 max, better endurance, and a more confident return to an active lifestyle, press play and start where you are. | 2/9/26 | Preparing for Hip Replacement Surgery and Recovery - Ep. 35 | How to Prepare for Hip Replacement Surgery: Prehab, Home Setup, and Recovery Tips Hip Replacement Recovery Plan: What to Do Before Surgery (Body, Mind, and Home) Preparing for Hip Replacement Surgery: Recovery Tips, Prehab, and a Smarter Plan for Life After Hip Replacement Preparing for hip replacement surgery can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, host Chris Bystriansky breaks preparation into a clear, practical roadmap to help you feel more confident about hip replacement surgery, hip replacement recovery, and life after hip replacement. If you’re searching for how to prepare for hip replacement surgery, what to expect after hip replacement surgery, or the best hip replacement recovery tips, this episode is your starting point. Chris answers a listener question by organizing hip replacement preparation into three essential areas: your physical body, your mental state, and your home environment. First, he covers “prehab” before hip replacement—simple ways to improve strength, mobility, and overall health to support better outcomes. He explains why even small improvements before surgery can help your recovery after hip replacement surgery and give you a greater sense of control during a time that can feel uncertain. Next, Chris dives into the mental side of hip replacement surgery—fear, anxiety, doubt, and the stress of waiting. He shares what it felt like to be stuck in pain, unsure about surgery, and uncertain about choosing the right surgeon. He also encourages thoughtful decisions: consider a second opinion, understand surgical approaches, and learn what recovery may really look like—because hip replacement recovery often “gets worse before it gets better” as your body adapts. Finally, he walks through practical home preparation for hip replacement surgery: removing trip hazards, planning where you’ll sleep, setting up shower and bathroom support, practicing with a walker or cane, planning for boredom, and making sure you leave the hospital with clear written instructions—especially regarding pain medication and incision bandage care. Chris also discusses compression stockings, circulation, swelling, and why physical therapy can help address new aches and pains that appear as your gait and body mechanics change. Whether you’re weeks away from surgery or months (or years) into recovery, this episode delivers grounded hip replacement advice to help you prepare, reduce stress, and move forward with more clarity. You’re not alone—there’s a massive community of hip replacement patients navigating the same path, and you can absolutely get back to doing the things you love. New hips. New you. Let’s go. In Episode 34 of The Hip Replacement Podcast, host Chris Bystriansky, a double hip replacement patient, author, and endurance athlete, shares a powerful and personal episode that connects physical recovery, long-term mobility, mental resilience, and purpose after hip replacement surgery. This episode begins with a vivid moment in the pool — cold air, warm water, stillness — a reminder that movement, consistency, and showing up matter, even years after surgery. From there, Chris dives deep into what it really means to live well after hip replacement, not just survive recovery. If you’re preparing for hip replacement surgery, recovering weeks or months after surgery, or navigating life years after a hip replacement, this episode will resonate. Chris explains why recovery from hip replacement is not a finish line, but a long-term process that evolves over time. He discusses how setbacks, mindset shifts, daily habits, and purpose all shape long-term hip replacement success. Drawing from his own journey — including writing the book New Steel — he reframes hip replacement not as an ending, but as a catalyst for growth. This episode also highlights: Why identity matters after hip replacement surgery How movement and consistency support long-term joint health Why mindset is just as important as physical therapy How to avoid letting “hip replacement patient” become your permanent label What’s still possible after hip replacement surgery — at any age Chris also announces free live virtual sessions for listeners who want to ask questions, gain clarity, and connect more deeply around recovery, mindset, and life after hip replacement. | 1/23/26 | SLOW DOWN - Ep. 33 | Hip Replacement Recovery: Why “Going Slow” Is the Fastest Way to Heal Right Hip replacement recovery isn’t a race—and trying to speed up your hip replacement surgery recovery timeline can quietly sabotage your results. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, host Chris Bystriansky breaks down the most overlooked recovery skill: going slow—especially during the first 6 months after hip replacement when your body is rebuilding strength, balance, and confidence. Chris opens with a story from his MBA years—110 round-trip flights between Houston and Chicago—and a pilot who bragged he could beat the flight computer’s arrival time. In the air, speeding up can make sense. But in recovery from hip replacement, rushing rarely pays off. The “get back to normal fast” mindset fuels bad decisions: doing too much too soon, comparing yourself to people on social media, and letting ego drive your rehab. If you’re asking, “How long does hip replacement recovery take?” Chris argues that’s the wrong question—like kids on a road trip asking, “Are we there yet?” Instead, ask: What can I do to get the best hip replacement recovery possible? Because recovery isn’t linear. Progress comes in waves—good weeks, sore days, plateaus, then breakthroughs—and that’s normal. This episode tackles the real risks of rushing: lingering pain, swelling that won’t settle, poor movement patterns, compensations, and the dreaded limp after hip replacement that can stick around for months or years. Chris explains why athletes miss entire seasons with injuries and why even baseball pitchers build rest into performance—your body needs time to heal, adapt, and recover. You’ll also hear practical guidance on physical therapy after hip replacement: form matters, patience matters, and “10 perfect reps beat 50 sloppy reps.” Plus, Chris shares red flags to watch for—sharp pains, ongoing limping, avoiding movements—and why slowing down doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing the right things at the right time for long-term success. Go slow now, so you can go strong later. New hips. New you. Let’s go. | 1/12/26 | Recovering from Setbacks After Hip Replacement - Ep. 32 | Recovering From Setbacks After Hip Replacement | Hip Replacement Recovery Setbacks after hip replacement surgery can happen days, months, or even years after surgery—and they can be frustrating, scary, and confusing. In this episode of The Hip Replacement Podcast, host Chris Bystriansky dives deep into recovering from setbacks after hip replacement and explains why aches, stiffness, and flare-ups don’t mean failure—or that something is wrong with your implant. Chris is a double hip replacement patient (12+ and 10+ years post-surgery), IRONMAN triathlete, and author of NEW STEEL. Drawing from decades of life after hip replacement, he shares real-world insight into why recovery from hip replacement is not linear, why pain does not always equal damage, and how patients can regain control instead of panic when symptoms return. This episode covers some of the most commonly searched concerns related to hip replacement recovery and hip surgery recovery, including: Why setbacks are normal—even long after hip replacement surgery Common triggers like standing too long, slow walking, travel, stress, and changes in routine How to identify what caused a setback instead of guessing or blaming the weather Muscle-related pain vs. implant problems after hip replacement IT band pain, stiffness, numbness, and leg discomfort after hip surgery Why stopping all activity after a setback can slow recovery How to safely keep moving while dialing back intensity Returning to foundational exercises, mobility, and physical therapy basics Using ice, heat, rest, stretching, and recovery tools wisely Managing fear, anxiety, and the mental side of hip replacement recovery How to rebuild strength and confidence gradually after a flare-up or setback When to seek help from a doctor or physical therapist Chris also explains why living with a hip replacement means accepting recovery as a lifelong process—not something that ends at three months or one year. The goal isn’t to avoid setbacks, but to respond to them calmly, intelligently, and confidently so they don’t become your new normal. This episode is for anyone: Recovering from hip replacement surgery Experiencing pain or stiffness after hip replacement Worried they “overdid it” after hip surgery Living an active life years after hip replacement Looking for perspective, reassurance, and practical guidance This podcast does not provide medical advice. Instead, it offers experience-based insight, recovery strategies, and inspiration to help you move forward with confidence and live your best life. | 12/27/25 | Episode 31 - The Importance of Upper Body Strength After a Hip Replacement | Upper Body Strength After Hip Replacement: Safer Mobility, Fewer Falls, Faster Hip Replacement Recovery The Hip Replacement Podcast – Upper Body Strength After Hip Replacement (Walker, Cane, Crutches & Fall Prevention) The Hip Replacement Podcast – Hip Replacement Recovery: Upper Body Strength for Mobility, Confidence, and Safer Movement Hip replacement recovery isn’t only about your hip. In Episode 31 of The Hip Replacement Podcast, host Chris Bystriansky explains why upper body strength is one of the most overlooked parts of hip replacement rehab—and how it can make total hip replacement recovery safer, smoother, and more confident. If you’ve had hip replacement surgery (or you’re preparing for it), you already know the daily “reps” add up: sitting to standing, getting in and out of cars, using a walker, cane, or crutches, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, pushing doors, and staying steady when balance is shaky. Chris breaks down how stronger arms, shoulders, back, core, and grip strength help you: • Get up and down more safely (chairs, beds, toilets, cars) • Reduce fall risk by stabilizing your torso and grabbing support quickly • Use walking assistance devices with less fatigue and more control • Improve posture and alignment so your hips, back, and knees take less stress • Build independence and confidence so you stay active long-term You’ll also get a simple definition of upper body strength, the muscle groups that matter most for hip replacement patients (arms, shoulders, chest, upper/mid-back, core stabilizers, forearms and grip), and easy, beginner-friendly ways to build strength without turning it into a complicated “gym thing.” Chris shares practical options like no-weight movements, resistance bands, light dumbbells (or household items), plus simple grip tools to improve hand and forearm strength. Bonus: If you want visuals for the bands, grip tools, and example movements (like wall push-ups, seated rows, shoulder work, and seated core bracing), check the YouTube version linked in the show notes. Quick takeaway checklist for hip replacement rehabilitation: • Prioritize grip strength: if your hands fatigue on a cane or walker, your whole system suffers. • Train “push” and “pull” patterns: pushing up from chairs/bed and pulling yourself steady are everyday skills. • Keep it consistent: 10 minutes, 2–4x per week beats one long workout that leaves you sore. • Start where you are: before surgery, 6 weeks after surgery, 6 months after surgery—upper body strength still matters. • Build for life after hip replacement: the goal isn’t just to “heal,” it’s to stay active, travel, play, and live without fear. If you’ve been stuck thinking only about hip pain, hip stiffness, and hip range of motion, this episode will widen the lens and give you a practical strength-training approach that supports hip surgery recovery for the long haul. This episode is motivational, practical, and focused on real life after hip replacement: protect your implant, move with confidence, and keep building a stronger body for the years ahead. | 12/10/25 | Episode 29 - Using a Pool for Hip Recovery, Strength and Mobility | Pool Therapy After Hip Replacement: Low-Impact Water Exercises for Faster Recovery, Strength, Mobility & Confidence The Hip Replacement Podcast: Pool Therapy After Hip Replacement (Water Exercises for Mobility, Strength & Low-Impact Recovery) The Hip Replacement Podcast: Aquatic Therapy for Hip Replacement Recovery (Swim, Walk, Stretch—Without Joint Pain) Hip replacement recovery doesn’t end when the incision heals—it evolves into long-term strength, mobility, and confidence. In The Hip Replacement Podcast, Chris Bystriansky breaks down exactly why pool therapy after hip replacement can be one of the most effective (and underrated) tools for hip replacement rehab, pain-free movement, and rebuilding your active life. If the idea of a pool makes you nervous—because you’re “not a swimmer,” you don’t like the water, or you feel self-conscious in a swimsuit—this episode is for you. Chris explains how you can use water or aquatic therapy, water exercise, and simple pool-based movements to improve range of motion, increase hip mobility, build endurance, and reduce joint pounding. The key advantage: the pool lets you move through a wider range of motion with less body weight on your joints, making it ideal for hip replacement recovery and ongoing joint-friendly fitness. Chris shares why swimming (or even basic pool movement) can leave your body feeling better than almost anything else—better than a sauna, hot tub, massage, or cold plunge—because it combines cardio, strength, stretching, and mobility in one low-impact session. You’ll also get practical safety notes for post-op hip replacement patients: when it’s safe to get in the water (incision healing), how to avoid slipping on the pool deck, and how to modify swimming so you can reduce strain (including gear that functions like “training wheels,” such as a pull buoy to reduce kicking). Whether you’re using a pool for physical therapy, gentle water walking, aqua aerobics, or lap swimming, this episode gives you a realistic plan to get started—without needing to be “good at swimming.” If your goal is better hip replacement rehabilitation, less stiffness, improved hip mobility, and a more active lifestyle, the pool might be your secret weapon.
