| 9/28/26 | Guerrilla Intellectuals: Theory and Practice w/Pranay Somayajula | From the belly of the empire to the frontlines of global liberation struggles, what does it mean to be an intellectual in service of mass movements? In this episode, Nick Estes (The Red Nation) and Pranay Somayajula sit down to dissect the vital synthesis of revolutionary theory and ground-level practice. Moving beyond academic insulation, they interrogate anti-colonial resistance, Third World solidarity, Indigenous liberation, and the role of the radical writer in organizing for collective power. | 9/7/26 | Indigenous Anti-Communism: Haunting Spectre of Ward Churchill w/ Nick Estes | ***Producer's note: TRN Podcast host Nick Estes joined Red Media-produced TYMSYY podcast, hosted by Sardana Nikolaeva and Masha Kardashevskaya, to talk about anti-communism, pretendianism, and the outsized role of Ward Churchill. Subscribe to TYMSYY if you don't already and help us grow the show*** This is the first installment of our collaborative series on Indigenous Anti-Communism with Nick Estes of The Red Nation Podcast. In this episode, we first introduce our intentions for the series and discuss why it matters to complicate and systematize the various discourses on anti-communism. We then turn to Ward Churchill (1947-2026), the American author and academic, and his edited volume "Marxism and Native Americans" (1983). Featuring Winona LaDuke, Vine Deloria Jr., Russell Means, and various Marxist writers, the volume became a foundational text for anyone interested in debates over Marxism and its relevance to Native American politics. However, as we learn in this episode, the volume's history and Ward Churchill's own legacy may not be as theoretically clear-cut as they seem. Nick Estes illuminates how the volume's anti-Marxist arguments distorted Indigenous understanding of Marxism and communism, which is reflected in the continued misunderstanding of the histories of anti-imperialist Indigenous solidarities. | 8/10/26 | Return to Bandung (#39) - From Minneapolis to Iran w/ Nick Estes | ***Producer's note: Reposting an episode Nick recorded with Return to Bandung*** In this episode, I'm joined by returning guest Nick Estes—associate professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota, cofounder of The Red Nation, and author of Our History Is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance(Verso Books, 2019)—to discuss last winter's federal occupation of Minnesota during the Trump Administration's 'Operation Metro Surge.' In this wide-ranging conversation, we attempt to complicate the artificial distinction between the 'domestic' and 'foreign' spheres, instead situating the fascist violence of Metro Surge within a larger context of both settler-colonial violence in the United States and escalating global aggression by the decaying American empire. About the show: Return to Bandung is hosted by Pranay Somayajula, an Indian-American writer, researcher, and organizer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His work explores themes of diaspora, (inter)nationalism, anticolonial politics, and the many lives and afterlives of empire. You can learn more about Pranay and read his writing on his website, as well as on his Substack blog, culture shock.
