In this sermon, Dr. Sean Cole answers three questions of this text: First, how did the Old Testament explain vows and oaths? (vs 33) Second, how were the religious leaders abusing the taking of oaths and vows? (vs. 34-36) Third, what is the main point of Jesus’ teaching on oaths? (vs. 37) By nature, we are all guilty liars who exaggerate, break our promises, use careless words, and at times are not trustworthy or reliable. We desperately need a Savior who is the Ultimate Truth Teller and the ultimate Promise Maker to rescue us from our sin by dying on the cross, forgiving us, and granting us eternal life in heaven.
