| 6/22/26 | ![]() 140 15 Minute Speed Coaching with Sharon Jones – Dogs and Car Journeys | Episode 140 – 15 Minute Speed Coaching with Sharon Jones – Dogs and Car Journeys Welcome to another 15-minute Speed Coaching Session for Veterinary and Pet Care Professionals! The rules of the game are as follows: · Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted. · Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish… · Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started! In this episode, I chat to Canine Dog Trainer and Behaviourist, Sharon Jones, about the challenges of working through cases where dogs show fear- or stress behaviours on car journeys. How do we know if this is a physical health concern (nausea or pain), fear or anxiety, fear learning, anticipatory excitement, frustration or something else? And, how do we start unpicking behaviours to find the emotional motivation and behavioural drivers? Have a listen as we chat through different thoughts and approaches, which medications may be useful and the discussions we have about this topic on the ACVB List serve. One of my passion projects – and indeed the topic of my residency research – is stress management during air travel in pets and while air- and car travel are different in some respects, they also share a LOT of commonalities. Here's a link to my review paper on Feline Stress Management during Air Travel, which I mention in the episode, and, of course, so much of this information can be extrapolated to dogs too ! https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1098612X221145521 I absolutely loved chatting to Sharon, and I really hope you find this episode useful ! | 6/15/26 | ![]() 139 Can I offer Veterinary Behaviour Consultations without being a Trainer? | Episode 139 – Can I offer Veterinary Behaviour Consultations without being a Trainer? This episode was inspired by a Zoom Call question from one of my lovely participants of Learn To Speak Dog and Learn To Speak Cat, who is in the process of setting up a Veterinary Behaviour Service in a new hospital she has started working in. Her concern is that she can't yet offer consultations as she has not yet found aligned trainers to work with who can support her in her cases. What do you think my thoughts and advice were to her? Have a listen to this episode to find out and to hear more about my own personal journey and how I currently manage the "Behaviour Modification" or "Training" element of the Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan. If you'd like the chance to ask me your questions in person, you can do that in our Live Group Zoom Calls in the following courses: Learn To Speak Dog - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-dog Learn To Speak Cat - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/learn-to-speak-cat Psychoactive - https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive And, of course, in my Membership Program – "The Behaviour Case Collective" https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/behaviour-case-collective If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe! | 6/8/26 | ![]() 138 To Avoid or not to Avoid – That is the Question! | 138 To Avoid or not to Avoid – That is the Question! The avoidance of triggers and stimuli is such an important part of the treatment plan and falls into the Management "M" of the "7 Ms" Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan Template! However, it is also the part that gets possibly the most pushback from caregivers for a number of different reasons. In this episode, I chat through those reasons as well as why I believe avoidance is so important for brain processes and eventually achieving a successful outcome. I also talk about the risks to the pet when we don't avoid and continue to expose them to threatening or frustrating triggers. Finally, I talk about some of the strategies I use to get caregivers on board and how we eventually do start the process of re-introduction to those triggers, stimuli and contexts. If you are a behaviourist or trainer working in practice, you may be very familiar with this topic and listening to my approach and reasoning may give you a different way of tackling some of these conversations. If you'd like to learn more about the "7 Ms" approach to Veterianry Beahviour Treatment Plans, then my Masterclass on exactly this topic is for you: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/treatment-plans If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe! | 6/1/26 | ![]() 137 Interoception – The 8th Sense | Episode 137 – Interoception – The 8th Sense This episode was inspired by the 3rd Case Call of "The Behaviour Case Collective" Membership where Dr Amber Batson and I co-presented a case where gastro-intestinal health had a big impact on Behaviour. During this conversation, the idea of Interoception was spoken about, and I thought it would be a GREAT topic to dive into! Interoception is one of the 3 "Hidden Senses" and is essentially a sensory system that provides a dialogue between the brain and the inside of the body. In this episode you will learn: 1. What Interoception is and how it fits in with the other 7 senses. 2. How altered Interoception can affect our patients. 3. How to apply treatment and therapy strategies to improve Interoception. I really hope you find this episode valuable and that it gives you food for thought when assessing your own Behaviour Patients! | 5/25/26 | ![]() 136 Cooperative Care with Charlotte Lewis | Episode 136 – Cooperative Care with Charlotte Lewis I am always talking about bridging the gap between Veterinary Professionals and great non-Veterinary Professionals and encouraging more collaborative ways of working to best serve our patients and their families. So, when I heard that Charlotte runs a Cooperative Care Service at her local Veterinary Practice, provides CPD to the Vets at the practice as well as educational classes to the practice's clients, I just knew I had to chat to her to find out more! In this episode, Charlotte and I chat about the benefits of Cooperative Care and Gentle Handling for the patients, the caregivers and the veterinary teams, and the kinds of cases that could benefit most from these approaches. Charlotte also provides some really simple, easy and effective tools for helping patients feel safer in the veterinary practice – tools that anyone working in most practices can easily learn and implement! We round up the podcast with an emotional conversation about the things Charlotte has learned from the veterinary team at the practice – resilience, a desire to show up no matter how big the emotional strain and a true love and commitment to the profession and the patients they serve – which left us both a little teary! This is one you'll definitely not want to miss ! In this episode, I chat to Registered Veterinary Nurse and Behaviour Advocate, Nikki McLeod, about ways in which we can make Behaviour Medicine more relevant and accessible to vets and other team members in general practice. Many of us who are behaviourally aware know all too well how frustrating it can be when other team members don't share that same awareness or approach. Listen as I share some of the strategies I have found effective in "onboarding" other team members to start thinking with awareness for mental and emotional wellbeing, the challenges that we still face and how the industry has changed for the better in the last 25+ years! | 5/11/26 | ![]() 134 Escitalopram | Episode 134 – Escitalopram Escitalopram is a really useful SSRI that is quite commonly prescribed by Veterinary Behaviour Specialists or veterinarians with a strong interest in Behaviour Medicine but is possibly sometimes overlooked by general practitioners. So, I thought we'd do a bit of a deep dive into escitalopram and the things you, as professionals, need to know about this medication. Here's what you'll learn: · Indications for and uses of escitalopram in Veterinary Medicine · Why escitalopram might be a good choice for fearful and anxious patients · When Escitalopram might be a better choice than fluoxetine (if legally possible – the dreaded cascade !!). · Potential drug interactions and contraindications. This is a bit of a whistlestop tour into escitalopram, but if you'd like to dive even deeper, I've got you covered – My PSYCHOACTIVE course contains everything you need to know: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive And, if you'd like to learn how escitalopram and other Veterinary Psychopharmaceuticals can be applied practically, then The Behaviour Case Collective, where we take a deep-dive into one real-life Behaviour Case every month, might be just the thing for you! https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/behaviour-case-collective If you'd like to book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me, you can do that right here: https://calendly.com/trinityvet/teams-and-professionals If you can't find an appointment time to suit you, please email us at info@trinityvetbehaviour.com to find a time that suits us both! In this episode, we talk about the main clinical signs associated with HSHA syndrome, the Differential Diagnoses, the purported underlying neurotransmitter imbalances and treatment approaches. | 2/17/26 | ![]() 122 Canine Sociability with Daniel Shaw | Episode 122 – Canine Sociability with Daniel Shaw Dogs are social creatures and the need for social connection and social experiences as well as the lack of those can sometimes result in unwanted behavioural presentations. In this super-cool episode, Daniel and I chat about: · The difference between fear or panic when dogs are separated from social partners and frustration at lacking or hampered social interactions with other dogs and the neurobiological systems that underlie both of these scenarios! · Social buffering and how this can really help some dogs that are perhaps fearful or anxious. · How we can help dogs adapt better to differing social demands. · Differing attachment styles and how these can impact social confidence and security. · A case I saw the same day as the recording that posed a number of challenges from a canine sociability point of view. Daniel and I are both really interested in the neurobiological and neurobiochemical underpinnings of behaviour and, dare I say it, can totally geek out about the brain processes that underlie behaviour as well as how we can practically apply this to our cases. If you're in any way interested in canine social behaviour, neurobiology and treatment approaches of some of the socially motivated behavioural challenges we see in our canine patients, this episode is a must-listen! | 2/3/26 | ![]() 120 Suspicion of Chronic Pain with Dr Hannah Capon | Episode 120 – Suspicion of Chronic Pain with Dr Hannah Capon One of the questions I get asked most frequently is how, if you are suspicious that your patient may be experiencing pain or discomfort, to relay this suspicion to the pet's GP vet or caregiver. Oftentimes, we see something during a consultation – a change in capability, posture, gait or behaviour – that makes us think there may be an underlying physical health challenge for our patient. But convincing GP vets or caregivers of the same can be challenging and frustrating. That is why, when I saw Dr Hannah Capon present her "Suspicion of Chronic Pain" document at one of the conferences we attended together last year, I had a light bulb moment of "this is exactly what we need". In this episode, Hannah and I chat about how the resource came into existence, how we like to use it and we highlight all the different scenarios this document might be so valuable in. It is important to note that this is not a validated tool, but rather an amazing, easy-to-use resource to be scribbled on during consultations and then presented to whomever needs to see it – be it caregiver or GP vet. It is also an incredible teaching tool to demonstrate that a patient is in pain or discomfort, and exactly which signs are raising red flags for us. I honestly wouldn't be without it anymore and I have it on my desk for literally ALL of my consultations – canine and feline. This amazing resource is included in Trinity's Professional Guides E-Book, which you can purchase right here: https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/trinity-ebook And, you can, of course find it in CAM's MemberZone: www.caninearthritis.co.uk If you liked this episode of the show, Veterinary Behaviour Chat, please LEAVE A 5-STAR REVIEW, like, share, and subscribe! | 1/13/26 | ![]() 117 Melatonin | Episode 117 – Melatonin This was such an interesting episode to record and one that certainly left me with more questions than answers. In response to a question posed by a listener, I did a bit of a deep dive into melatonin, which resulted in some very interesting findings… The general consensus about the use of melatonin within the Veterinary Behaviour world is that we simply don't have enough evidence of its anxiolytic or calming properties – both anecdotally as well as in the literature. I did, however, find some other very interesting uses of melatonin, which I talk about in the episode. I also chat about the use of melatonin as part of the "Chill Protocol" as described by Costa et.al. in JAVMA, 2023: Costa, R.S., Jones, T., Robbins, S., Stein, A. and Borns-Weil, S., 2023. Gabapentin, melatonin, and acepromazine combination prior to hospital visits decreased stress scores in aggressive and anxious dogs in a prospective clinical trial. Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 261(11), pp.1660-1665. In summary, melatonin is an extremely interesting neurohormone that has so many incredible effects, however, the jury is still out on its use and effectiveness as an anxiolytic. It may, however, be a useful agent for canine and feline patients showing sleep-wake-cycle abnormalities due to Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.
