August shares his personal journey from being diagnosed as pre-diabetic at 47, weighing over 400 pounds, to transforming his life through consistency, accountability, and a commitment to health. We dive into how his life as a nightclub DJ, late-night eating, and sedentary habits contributed to his weight gain, and how hitting that pre-diabetic diagnosis became the wake-up call he needed. August talks about joining Weight Watchers with his supportive wife and how the structured plan, coupled with a community of like-minded men, helped him find success and stay motivated. Throughout the episode, August highlights the importance of small, sustainable steps, leaning on a strong support system, and celebrating non-scale victories along the way. From walking his dog to riding his Peloton five times a week, August’s journey is proof that it's never too late to make a positive change. Show Highlights: Start slow: August stresses the importance of beginning with small steps and building healthy habits over time. | 8/11/24 | ![]() Angela's Transformation: From Dieting Cycles to Sustainable Health | EP116: Angela's Transformation: From Dieting Cycles to Sustainable Health In this episode of the Weight Loss Warrior podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Angela, a remarkable woman from Birmingham, UK, who has experienced a profound transformation in her health and mindset. Angela shares her journey from a lifetime of dieting and weight loss programs to finally finding a sustainable approach that not only helped her lose weight but also improved her overall health and well-being. The episode begins with Angela introducing herself and reflecting on her lifelong struggle with weight. She described how she has always been overweight, from being a chubby baby to an overweight adult. Growing up in a Caribbean household, Angela developed a deep love for the rich and flavorful foods of her culture, which included a lot of starchy and fried foods. This cultural influence, combined with the constant negative feedback she received about her weight from family, teachers, and the medical profession, led to a complicated relationship with food. Angela shared that she began rebelling with food at a young age, using it as a form of control when she felt powerless in other areas of her life. This behavior continued into adulthood, where she found herself in a cycle of joining various weight loss programs, losing some weight, and then gaining it all back. Despite trying numerous diets and programs over the years, including Weight Watchers, Slimming World, and Keto, Angela’s weight continued to increase, and she developed several serious health conditions, including lupus, type 2 diabetes, and fibromyalgia. The turning point for Angela came at Christmas 2019, when she found herself unable to get out of the sofa due to her weight and health issues. Realizing something had to change, she decided to give Weight Watchers one final try in January 2020. While she did lose weight, she found the focus on tracking and the scales to be restrictive and unsustainable. In August 2022, Angela had an epiphany: she realized that her cultural foods were missing from her diet, and the constant tracking was not working for her. She decided to put away the scales and stop obsessing over numbers. Instead, Angela focused on healthy habits, portion control using her hands as a guide, and enjoying her food by cooking whole foods from scratch. This shift in mindset, from focusing on weight loss to improving her health, was transformative. Over time, she lost 130 pounds and improved her overall health, all while enjoying her cultural foods without guilt. Angela emphasized the importance of self-belief, changing the narrative in her head from negative to positive, and learning to trust herself and her body. She now focuses on eating for health rather than just weight loss and has developed a sustainable lifestyle that allows her to enjoy food while maintaining her health. | 5/19/24 | ![]() The impact of changing your mindset - Gen's Journey as a coaching client | EP104: The impact of changing your mindset - Gen's Journey as a coaching client I am really excited to share this with you Warrior Tribe and hope you find it helpful. My special guest today is Gen who recently completed a 12 week coaching program with me and was happy to share her experience with you all. We dive into the challenges that Gen had faced which like so many of us involved years of struggling with being overweight and dieting. When Gen and I began speaking her goals were clear however her habits, reliance on motivation and past experience created a difficult environment for the ultimate objective to be reached. This episode is important for me to share because I feel there are so many people who listen to the show and experience the same struggle as Gen explains, not making any meaningful changes between attempts, hoping for a different outcome and having to manage the feeling of failure when things don't work out. I say that with compassion as someone who spent years going through the same cycle until learning the benefits of focusing on mindset. Gen shares how coaching has allowed her to approach weight loss from a different angle, focusing on the behaviours and thinking in a different way with regards to being on a diet. We talk about how there is so much emphasis and pressure attached to whether the scale goes up or down, placing our judgement and self worth on this single factor whereas the truth is there is so much more you can measure in order to be successful. One key difference is that Gen now lives with a level of confidence and self-esteem that has increased dramatically since we began working together. You can hear in her voice that there is no longer the fear to experience social events or dinners out like before, and her excitement for the journey she on can offer encouragement to anyone else wanting the same. As mentioned on the episode, I am offering a completely free coaching session to all listeners who are curious to find out if having a mentor may will help. I have found this is a great way for you as a potential client to see if this is a good fit for you, as well as the opportunity for me to demonstrate the deep power and impact coaching can have. | 1/15/24 | ![]() Losing 355lbs after bariatric surgery - Eric's weight loss journey | EP87 - Losing 355lbs after bariatric surgery - Eric's weight loss journey Today’s inspiring Weight Loss Warrior is educator, author and all round nice guy, Eric Johnson from Michigan. Eric had spent the majority of his life overweight, but when he found himself out of work and unable to find a new employer, food became his full time comfort and led to him tipping the scales at 550lbs (250kg). Realising that he had no real quality of life and in extreme pain from the pressure being put on his joints, Eric knew something had to change or he simply wouldn't survive many more years. This is when Eric began seeking support, and decided to change his life. Eric had bariatric surgery, a procedure that has changes the size of the stomach to control the amount of food that can be eaten. It can have incredible results, but is by no means the easy route some believe it to be. During our conversation, Eric shares his journey through surgery and talks about the almost immediate impact this had on his mindset, feeling "lighter" as he woke up from the operation despite weighing exactly the same at this stage. This was particularly interesting because the way we think plays such an important part of a weight loss journey. Eric went on to have both knees replaced and one hip, giving him much more mobility and combined with his weight loss, a completely new outlook on life. He now enjoys taking in part in activities instead of driving his wife to them and watching from the car park. We also talk about his love for being active and going to the gym. Another exciting part of this transformation is that Eric was inspired to write about his journey and shares the full story in his book, The "Weight" Is Over. Here is an overview: "Sharing personal challenges in weight loss, this soul-baring account explores weight gain’s impact on every aspect of life and plots a path to defeat depression with exercise and proper dieting as a lifestyle change. With candor and humor, Johnson reveals realities of temptations and setbacks as well as hurdles to overcome mental barriers to health and fitness. Buoyed by faith, Johnson shares this no-fear prescription, which speaks to optimism and persistence in battle. Rebound from career woes, confidence worries, and compounding weight with committed work. For men and women seeking methods to maintain personal health, the tales and tips will embolden you to dig deep into root causes and find a higher purpose via dedication and accountability." | 7/17/23 | ![]() How Johdi lost over 75lbs and started saying YES to new experiences | EP62: How Johdi lost over 75lbs and started saying YES to new experiences My special guest today is Johdi from a beautiful part of the UK, Ribble Valley near Burnley. Johdi has lost an amazing 5.5 Stone (77lbs) during her weight loss journey and joins me to share how much happier she is for making the decision to transform her life. I know it can sound dramatic when we talk about "life changing" weight loss, but when you hear all the positive changes that come as a result of losing weight, you start to realise just how much better your quality of life can become. For Johdi, she explains how she now has the confidence to try new experiences and I love how she almost laughed in disbelief of herself when talking about going for a 10k run. I think when we find ourselves in a difficult situation and feel unhappy, it's so easy to begin to believe there is nothing better waiting for us and we should just accept our fate and struggle through life. When listening to this episode, you will hear how Johdi refused to accept that as her reality and how important it was to her to make positive changes to become a fitter and healthier mum for her son. Make sure you check Johdi's Intagram and follow her. Her account has a lot of really delicious meal ideas and you can see photos of her latest Magazine feature! | 7/10/23 | ![]() How Sarah lost 19 stone (266 lbs) and her journey to maintain a healthy weight | EP61: How Sarah lost 19 stone (266 lbs) and her journey to maintain a healthy weight My special guest today has proved that weight loss plans can work, if you follow their plan. Having experienced success during her journey of losing 19 stone with Slimming World, Weight Watchers and Calorie Counting I have the pleasure of hearing how and why Sarah switched it up along with the pros and cons of each. After I finished our interview, I stopped and let it sink in just what an incredible achievement this was. I will be the first to admit that losing even a few pounds after a holiday can require determination and discipline, so to turn up for yourself week after week, month after month to lose 19 stone is simply incredible. Sarah shares the emotion of being able to buy clothes in high street shop for the first time and some other amazing changes she has experienced as part of becoming slimmer. We talk about confidence, health and how now Sarah feels she can live her life to the max. I also learn how Sarah has used a powerful shift in her own mindset to overcome emotional eating when a situation or person upsets her. I think it's a really powerful way to use the negative emotion to drive a positive result so urge you to try it if you find yourself in a similar situation I caught up with Sarah at a moment in her journey where she is just starting out with a Coach to help her adjust to her new life and maintain her weight loss. We talk about how after hitting her lowest weight, a lack of consistency led to regaining some back. This is something I believe so many people have an experience of and I feel it can often be related to not having that next objective, or perhaps even after so long of restricting yourself at some level, allowing that release of pressure. | 3/2/23 | ![]() Hear how Sarah lost over 6 Stone & won a national award for her weight loss | Today I am extremely pleased and proud to introduce Sarah Wynter, national award winner of Miss Slinky 2023, presented by Slimming World for her amazing achievement of weight loss. In this episode, you will hear how a "normal" mum made the decision to change her life after years of not feeling happy with being overweight. Sarah talks to me about the emotional and physical struggles she faced as part of her daily life and job working in a Intensive Care Unit of a busy hospital. You can hear the difference in Sarah's voice between looking back at some of the more difficult moments before losing weight and her new life having commited to the Slimming World plan and losing almost 7 stone as part of her journey. As well as being a national award winner, beating over 10,000 other worthy applicants, Sarah has also now appeared on the front cover of the latest Slimming World magazine and I hear how surreal it has been for her to receive photos from friends and family all over the UK who have spotted her on the shelves of their local shops. Although Sarah is a warm, remarkable person with a kind heart who has acheived something incredible, she is the first to say she is just a normal person and that anyone can do this if they put their mind to it. Our special guest today is Claire and she talks to me about how comfort eating became a coping mechanism after suffering mental trauma. Something that strikes me about this conversation is that we are often placed in situations and environments that are detrimental to our mental health. If we are not equipped with the correct methods to cope and manage high pressure or stressful conditions, our body goes into survival mode and this in itself can create behaviours that we didn’t realise could impact us. Claire does an amazing job of explaining how PTSD had engulfed all parts of her daily life and had a negative effect on both physical and mental health. She shares how she has been able to begin the road to recovery and show a true fighting spirit in finding a more balanced life and better health. This episode is a strong reminder to all that being a Weight Loss “Warrior” is so much more than a number on the scales or a total amount of lbs lost. The journey of transformation towards a happier and healthier life requires us to work on ourselves in many ways. We often think that by losing X amount of lbs, we will instantly be happy however we also need to focus on mental health and emotional health too. A big thank you to Claire for talking openly about her experience and bringing focus to some important topics that we should feel more able to discuss without fear.
