| 10/9/25 | ![]() 44 - Justified Poisonings, Directing from Prison and The Real Life "Up!" with Guest Host Karen Hassan | It's Friday again so let's celebrate in the only way we know how which is to sit and share lesser known fun facts and mad stories. But this week it's a bit different!GUEST PRESENTER ALERT!!Yes in a twist, Gill is literally on the other side of the world so we are so grateful and happy to welcome Karen Hassan as a guest presenter!!Karen brings her own set of facts and frankly enjoys telling the story of the most prolific man-poisoner of all time a little bit too much! She also shares a fun fact about the harp-based Guinness logo and finally she tells us the inspirational and complex story of Yılmaz Güney, a Kurdish film director, screenwriter, novelist, actor and communist political activist and how his story served as a lesson to us all to not let circumstances stand in out way of achieving our dreams. In a very similar vein (no, honestly) Pete shares the adventures of Lawnchair Larry who didn't let simple restrictions such as not having a plane or a pilot's license stop him from reaching for the skies. He also tells us the story of the Phonautograph and its inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville who broke new ground in sound recording but was never able to hear his work. Pete also tells us how "singing roads" came to be and also how a bird just going about its business nearly sparked a Cold War Crisis.Gill isn't entirely absent as she calls in with a question from the other side... (of the world).Follow us on Social Media:Threads: @WhatTheFactualpodInstagram: @whatthefactualpodEmail us..: whatthefactualpod@gmail.comYoutube...: www.youtube.com/@whatthefactualpodFacts The Way I Like It! is written and presented by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Subjects & Research by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Sound, Editing & Music by Pete Moor. | 10/2/25 | ![]() 43 - Fact Overload, Famous Last Words & Plants With Ears | Another Friday, another Fact Overload with respected purveyors of fact sharing, Gill Smith and Pete Moor. This week Pete just hits Gill with far too many facts in the form of 2 rounds of Friday Quiz fun including subjects such as Geography, History, Geographical History, Historical Geography and Goldfish memories (in more ways than one).Sandwiched between these quiz rounds are some facts including how plants can "hear" the sound of rushing water and also how lightning can be converted into natural glass which reminds Gill of a film she didn't enjoy (may or may not be Sweet Home Alabama)...Gill in turn shares some lesser known famous last words which somehow sparks a discussion about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She also shares some famous quotes and finally some sayings which are often mis-quoted or misunderstood and some of them mean the exact opposite to what we usually think. We're off to plant some apple trees... and to live our lives completely guided by a magic 8 ball.Follow us on Social Media:Threads: @WhatTheFactualpodInstagram: @whatthefactualpodEmail us..: whatthefactualpod@gmail.comYoutube...: www.youtube.com/@whatthefactualpodFacts The Way I Like It! is written and presented by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Subjects & Research by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Sound, Editing & Music by Pete Moor. | 9/25/25 | ![]() 42 - Tudor Deaths, Gladiator Sweat & Deathbed Confessions | It's Friday and that can only mean one thing. Well, it can mean a lot of things but one of the things it does mean is more facts being shared by the King and Queen of Fact Sharing, namely Gill Smith and Pete Moor. This week, delves into the murky world of Tudor deaths and the most common causes of death which include slightly rash challenges during a football match. She also tells us the story of Charles Dickens' brush with death in a train crash which wasn't ideal for his secretive romantic dalliances. Also, Gill tells us of the Barley Boys who in ancient times were the subject of some very weird obsessive practices.Pete focuses on the cheerful subjects of last words before death. Specifically the last words of Tomáš Masaryk (mentioned last week) and also the confessions of certain people who know their days are numbered... or at least they think they are. Finally, he looks into the monochrome world of Zebra coats and how and why they help a zebra deal with little flying critters. The fact is that just no one is quite sure why they have those wonderful stripes. But frankly who cares? They are just brilliant and we love em!!Right we're off to spritz ourselves with some Gladiator Sweat.Follow us on Social Media:Threads: @WhatTheFactualpodInstagram: @whatthefactualpodEmail us..: whatthefactualpod@gmail.comYoutube...: https://www.youtube.com/@whatthefactualpodFacts The Way I Like It! is written and presented by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Subjects & Research by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Sound, Editing & Music by Pete Moor. | 9/18/25 | ![]() 41 - Masaryk's Last Words, The Golf War & Too Many Acorns | Another Friday means more plump facts being plucked from the great old legendary fact bearing tree by fact farming duo, Gill Smith and Pete Moor. They then share the freshly picked, perfectly ripe facts with you, the crisp fact enthusiasts, to satisfy your latest fact cravings. In other words, here are more facts from Gill and Pete.THIS WEEK! :-Gill tells us that this year, the trees are over-producing when it comes to acorns but for good reason. She also tells us of the temporary changes to the rules of golf when playing during the second world war. Just standard things like how many penalty strokes you get if you take cover from bombs and gunfire. We think this may have been someone having a little joke to lighten the mood in 1940. Finally she tells us of how evolution failed the Myanmar Sunbnosed Monkey and how they are basically allergic to rain... which is not ideal because... well, it rains on them sometimes.Pete puts us all off our dinners by telling us of the medical procedure "tooth-in-eye" surgery which is as literal as it sounds. He also has BREAKING NEWS which involves literally the opening of an envelope (but it's a really special envelope). This will be in the news today: The opening of a mysterious envelope containing the last words and thoughts of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia. Finally he tells us of the infamous attempted Red Bull Plane Swap... which again is as literal as it sounds!! (oh but the swap was taking place in mid-air rather than just on the ground which may have been more sensible).Enjoy Fact Seekers!!Follow us on Social Media:Threads: @WhatTheFactualpodInstagram: @whatthefactualpodEmail us..: whatthefactualpod@gmail.comYoutube...: https://www.youtube.com/@whatthefactualpodFacts The Way I Like It! is written and presented by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Subjects & Research by Gill Smith & Pete Moor.Sound, Editing & Music by Pete Moor. | 9/4/25 | ![]() 39 - Now Facts What I Call Facts (A Compilation) | It's another Friday of Fact based fun but this week is a little different as Gill is M.I.A. on her travels. Pete is flying solo and looks back at some of their favourite facts from the early days of the podcast. We look back at the memorable moment when Gill grossed herself out with a medical fact, Pete grossed Gill out by telling her a fact about Geology and also Gill gets grossed out by a historic medical moment of heroism after an arrow based battle mishap. In non-gross facts they also look at John Cage's most time consuming musical performance, the most successful female pirate of all time and a luckily unsuccessful royal assassin. We hope you enjoy this little bundle of facts from our early days. Normal service will resume next week!! It's that simple and this week, Gill is absent from the studio but not to worry, listeners, she is dialling in from Mama Smith's Birthday celebrations! So we apologise for the quality of Gill's sound but we don't apologise for the quality of the facts.Today, Gill packs yet another Dictator based punch with regular segment "Name That Dictator", she also explains why some people develop blue or green eyes and she tells us the frankly marvelous fact that in the 1940s you could get a breakfast cereal with a radio-active toy inside!Pete tells the wonderfully stupid story of the Bone Wars where two rival paleontologists attempted to out-do each other in the discovery or dinosaur fossils - purely because one of them put a head where the tail should be... and the other one ripped him for it!He also shares the rather sticky story of how velcro became to be.
