Y’s Guys Podcast

It's Notre Dame week. Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler opened with 5-0, No. 8 BYU set to host 6-0, No. 2 Notre Dame on October 17 in what both hosts — and nearly every guest — called a contender for the biggest game in BYU football history. The Cougars dispatched Iowa State 24-10 behind Bear Bachmeier's 438 total yards and two touchdowns (earning him Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week) and freshman Legend Glasker's 75-yard touchdown grab, though LJ Martin's high-ankle sprain will sideline him for at least a month. The hosts broke down just how evenly matched these teams are statistically — two top-10 scoring defenses, with Notre Dame's historic turnover margin as the separator — before running through Kalani Sitake's media availability, the game's uniform and weather details, and the BYU-Notre Dame series history. A new segment also debuted this week: a recurring "Item of the Week" merchandise reveal presented by The BYU Store, kicking off with a new Big 12/BYU hoodie.Three guests captured the week's magnitude. Former BYU receiver Tim Nowatzke shared an emotional, deeply personal account of catching a touchdown against Notre Dame in 1992 the week his grandfather died, his subsequent conversion to the LDS Church, and BYU's 1994 win in South Bend. F-35 pilot Jefferson Page, call sign "Bender" and commander of a fighter squadron at Hill Air Force Base, previewed Saturday's four-jet flyover — including the moment his own son, a BYU ROTC cadet, will watch him fly over LaVell Edwards Stadium — and offered a fighter pilot's spin on Blaine's keys to victory. Tim LaComb, former BYU assistant basketball coach and current Utah Jazz broadcaster, stopped by to preview his band's pregame performance at Cougar Canyon. The back half brought Campus Notes on BYU's across-the-board fall sports success, a look ahead to Friday's Nebraska exhibition basketball game and Texas Tech soccer match, and a new format for the BYU Super Fan segment: Boise-based sports media student Caleb Tonks joined by Zoom, followed by longtime superfans (and grandparents of 42) Ruth and Mike Strain live in studio. The show wrapped with this week's biggest games, BYU alumni around the NFL, and a tease for next Monday's Notre Dame recap with BYU Hall of Famer Gifford Nielsen. Hosted on Acast. visit: https://www.ysguys.comDave McCann and Blaine Fowler welcome BYU football back from its bye week during the week of General Conference, with the Cougars sliding one spot to No. 10 in the AP Top 25 (No. 9 in the Coaches Poll) behind a loaded top nine that includes Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, Florida and Ole Miss. They preview Saturday's 5 p.m. kickoff at TCU's Amon G. Carter Stadium — a game squeezed around General Conference sessions, with BYUSN GameDay shifting to the BYUtv app and ESPN+ — playing a clip of Kalani Sitake's Monday press conference and laying out Blaine's three keys to victory: winning the turnover margin, avoiding big plays over the top from returning TCU receiver Jordan Dwyer, and protecting Bear Bachmeier up front while redshirt tackle Paki Finau steps in for injured starter Andrew Gentry.Volleyball freshman Brooke Hardy is named the Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week for her record-setting five-set performance against Baylor. The night's headline guest is BYU Hall of Famer and Super Bowl XLI champion Rob Morris, "The Freight Train," who tells the story of the nickname, recalls LaVell Edwards pulling him aside to move him from running back to linebacker, breaks down his transition to the Colts, and opens up candidly about 18 career surgeries, open-heart surgery, and how a post-NFL collapse led him into motivational speaking on resilience.Dallas-Fort Worth alumni chapter president Tyson Oblad joins to preview a tailgate weekend shifted to Friday night because of General Conference, including a Cougs Care book drive benefiting a Fort Worth literacy nonprofit.Campus Notes cover BYU's fall sports staying ranked across the board, a dominant cross country showing at the Cowboy Jamboree, a 3-1 soccer win over UCF, a five-set volleyball win over Baylor, three Cougars winning NORCECA U23 gold in men's volleyball, and the latest on Jaxon Kohler's eligibility case and AJ Dybantsa's NBA rookie ranking. The show closes with two Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris super fans: longtime fan Nick Nelson, live in studio, who tells the story of proposing to his wife Sharon with an airplane banner over a BYU-Wyoming game and plays a round of "Where Were You?," and Tim Strickland, the show's first-ever super fan joining from Perth, Australia, who covers a Paraguay-era fandom story, a Five Questions round, and the tale of how he first met Blaine Fowler at a snow cone stand years ago. visit: https://www.ysguys.comDave McCann and Blaine Fowler open a celebratory Monday night after BYU's 28-17 Big 12-opening win over Arizona pushed the Cougars to No. 11 in the new AP Top 25 — a jump of several spots over teams that didn't even lose. Bear Bachmeier threw for three touchdowns (two to Kyler Kasper) and ran for another with zero turnovers, earning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors, while defensive end Tausili Akana (2.5 sacks) was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week. Dave and Blaine break down how BYU trailed 17-14 at the half before shutting Arizona out in the second half, review LJ Martin's 98-yard, 20-carry workload, and grade Blaine's preseason three keys to victory (turnover margin, limiting big plays, and controlling tempo) all as pluses. They also run through the rest of the Big 12 and national landscape — Oklahoma State's upset of Oregon, Michigan's win over Oklahoma, Texas A&M's rout of Arizona State, and Notre Dame's blowout of Rice ahead of its trip to Provo next month — before previewing Saturday's trip to Colorado State, BYU's first-ever primetime game on CBS and first visit to Fort Collins in 26 years.Kyler Kasper, whose two second-half touchdowns sealed the Arizona win, is named the Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week, with the hosts recapping his path from an injury-shortened Oregon career to a big night in his BYU debut season. Former BYU quarterback Brandon Doman joins the show to discuss Bear's rise (both went 14-2 in their first 16 starts), the value of LJ Martin as a running mate, BYU's climb to No. 11, and the schedule ahead, before counting down his top five favorite wins as a BYU starter in a Five Questions segment that closes with LaVell Edwards's final game as head coach. BYU alumni Craig and Melissa Seeger preview the Fort Collins trip, including the Cougs Care service project collecting books to fight illiteracy, and a Quick Quack Car Wash promo highlights a Santa Maria, California grand opening benefiting a cancer-surviving mother of six.Campus Notes cover a remarkable feat — every BYU fall sport remains ranked in the top 25 — plus basketball's addition of 7-foot-1 recruit Petar Ostojic and the NCAA's ruling that transfer big man Jakub Urbaniak is ineligible, women's basketball commit Pippa (Delaney's younger sister), a rough week for soccer, strong showings from both cross country teams, a five-set volleyball win over UCLA, and Friday night's BYU Athletic Hall of Fame class headlined by Kyle Van Noy, who flew in between Minnesota Vikings commitments. Two Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris super fans round out the show: Sylvia Texidor of Wisconsin, a convert who's followed the Cougars since attending BYU in the 1970s, and Bill Winfield of Ventura, California, who lived through BYU's legendary Gifford Nielsen-Marc Wilson-Jim McMahon-Steve Young quarterback run and shares eyewitness stories from the 1980 Holiday Bowl and more. The show closes with a shout-out to the prior week's Arizona flyover pilot and a look ahead to next Monday's guests. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Dave and Blaine break down the newly released depth chart — Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin atop the offense, a veteran-heavy defensive front, and real competition for reps behind the starters — before playing Kalani Sitake's own comments from his first regular-season media day. New BYUtv football analyst Jaren Hall, a former BYU starting quarterback and Minnesota Vikings draft pick, joins the show for his on-air debut, reflecting on the highs and lows of chasing an NFL roster spot, what's impressed him most about Bear Bachmeier, and reliving two of the wildest plays of his own BYU career: forcing the fumble recovery on the infamous Arizona State pick-six-that-wasn't and marveling at Puka Nacua's game-saving catch against Boise State. Volleyball's Elli Mortensen is honored as the Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week after a big weekend in Florida, and Utah Tech play-by-play voice Rod Zundel calls in to detail his Trailblazers' brutal 54-0 loss to defending FCS champion Montana State and to marvel at how quickly BYU has climbed from the WAC to Big 12 contender.BYU Alumni Association executive director Michael Johanson returns to preview a new home-game tradition called "Bringing It Home," anchored by a September 11 kickoff-week service event in downtown Provo called First Down Provo, plus the alumni association's continuing ice-cream giveaways for visiting fans and its road-game service projects in cities like Fort Collins, Fort Worth, Orlando and Lawrence. The show closes with two Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris Super Fan interviews. Brothers Chris and Chad Lamb, whose father Terry Lamb spent years as a KSL television producer and director on BYU broadcasts, reminisce about working as sideline spotters for Dave and Blaine in college and play a round of "Where Were You?" running from the 1984 Holiday Bowl through Harvey Unga's 2007 game-winner over Utah. St. George's Chris and Cheryl Nelson then share an unforgettable story about running into BYU legend Vai Sikahema in a hospital elevator while Cheryl was in labor in 1985 — an encounter memorable enough that they later named their son Ty (after Ty Detmer) and their grandson Zach (after Zach Wilson). Both super-fan couples predict a Cougar win over Notre Dame this October, and the show wraps with the Redmond Roots Rollout's look back at BYU and sports history on August 31st. Hosted on Acast. Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler open fall camp week three with the release of the AP Preseason Top 25, where BYU debuts at No. 14 — the Cougars' highest preseason ranking since 1985 and just their second Top 25 preseason nod in 17 years. They run down the full poll (Ohio State, Oregon and Georgia lead the way, with Notre Dame at No. 4 ahead of its October trip to Provo), note LJ Martin cracking Pro Football Network's Top 100 NFL Draft Prospects list as he chases a repeat Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year season, and highlight an ESPN.com feature on why Kalani Sitake is "your favorite coach's favorite coach," featuring quotes from rival Big 12 coaches Brent Brennan, Rich Rodriguez and Joey McGuire. They also address, briefly, the ongoing situation between Sitake and BYU athletic director Brian Santiago before pivoting to a tribute to quarterback Marc Wilson's induction into the Sporting News 1970s All-Decade Team.Campus Notes cover the Cougars in the NFL ahead of roster cutdown day, Rob Wright III's No. 4 ranking among college basketball's top point guards, AJ Dybantsa's NBA rookie schedule, women's soccer and volleyball updates, and BYU golf's showing at the Utah Open. The Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week is freshman Brynnli Tolbert, whose 60th-minute goal at UCLA sealed a 2-1 win. Former BYU tight end Andrew George then joins from Colorado to preview the Cougars' new tight end tandem of Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga II, drawing on his own legendary pairing with Dennis Pitta — right down to the play that sprung McKay Jacobsen for the game-sealing touchdown against Oklahoma — and projects what it could mean for Bear Bachmeier's sophomore season. The back half features BYU-Pathway grad Chantell Hammond, founder of Strategy Square, sharing how finishing her degree online transformed her confidence, a Quick Quack Car Wash fundraiser spotlight, and two Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris BYU Super Fans — Bret Stailey, joining from Jacksonville, Florida with his son Jack, and Janene Creer, LIVE in the Provo studio — who each share their BYU history and play a round of "Where Were You?" revisiting classic Cougar moments. The show wraps with campus notes, an On This Day history segment (The Wizard of Oz's 1939 premiere, Willie Mays' final home run), an inspirational quote from Mays, and a tease for next week's guests: former Cougar Harvey Langi and Entrata CEO Adam Edmunds, whose company will appear on BYU's jerseys this fall.Timestamps (approximate):0:00 – Show Open: Welcome to Y's Guys, Live Around the World8:47 – BYU Debuts at No. 14 in the AP Preseason Top 2519:03 – LJ Martin Cracks the NFL Draft's Top 100 Big Board21:45 – Why Kalani Sitake Is "Your Favorite Coach's Favorite Coach"23:28 – Dave & Blaine Address the Kalani Sitake–AD Situation27:24 – Remembering Marc Wilson, BYU's 1970s All-Decade Quarterback34:57 – Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week: Brynnli Tolbert36:37 – Campus Notes: Hoops, Volleyball, Golf & AJ Dybantsa's NBA Schedule55:32 – Andrew George Joins the Show from Colorado1:03:15 – Andrew George Breaks Down BYU's New Tight End Duo1:14:05 – Chantell Hammond on Her BYU-Pathway Journey & Strategy Square1:29:07 – Super Fan Bret Stailey Joins Live from Jacksonville, Florida1:40:46 – Super Fan Janene Creer Recalls BYU's 1990 Upset of No. 1 Miami1:55:35 – On This Day: The Wizard of Oz, Willie Mays & BYU History2:00:17 – Next Week: Harvey Langi & Entrata CEO Adam Edmunds#YsGuys #BYUFootball #BYUCougars #CougarNation #GoCougs #Big12Football #AndrewGeorge #LJMartin #BearBachmeier #KalaniSitake #MarcWilson #ChantellHammond #BYUPathway #WalkerLyons #RogerSaleapaga #BrynnliTolbert #BYUSoccer #BYUSuperfans #DaveMcCann #BlaineFowler #lds Hosted on Acast. This week’s Y’s Guys marked what Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler believe is the show’s 200th episode, as they reflected on nearly four years of weekly livestreams and thanked the fans, sponsors, and BYU community who have helped the show grow. The episode opened with BYU basketball and football headlines, including AJ Dybantsa officially declaring for the NBA Draft, his heartfelt “Cougar for life” message, BYU’s continued search for a center, and several Cougars landing NFL opportunities through the draft, free agency, and minicamp invites. The first guest was Justin Anderson, BYU football’s director of player personnel, who discussed his playing days, BYU’s 2001 season, the current state of the football program, recruiting strategy, NIL, transfer portal evaluation, and why getting athletes to campus is so important. He also explained how BYU’s NFL success helps recruiting, especially when players like Fred Warner, Puka Nacua, Taysom Hill, Kyle Van Noy, and others continue to represent the program at a high level. The show also honored Ashton Johnson as the Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week after back-to-back saves helped BYU baseball win a key series at Arizona. Later, BYU entrepreneur Mike Peterson joined the show for a wide-ranging conversation about his BYU experience, Lafayette Energy, tar sands, vertical farming, global food security, water conservation, NIL mentorship, and his service as mission president in Taipei. The episode wrapped with campus notes, including BYU women’s track ranked No. 2 nationally, baseball’s important upcoming rivalry series with Utah, women’s tennis preparing for the NCAA Tournament, and women’s basketball adding size through the transfer portal.#BYU #BYUSports #BYUFootball #BYUBasketball #AJDybantsa #JustinAnderson #AshtonJohnson #BYUBaseball #BYUAthletics #NFLDraft #CougarNation #YSGUYS #WiseGuys #LDS #BYU Hosted on Acast.
