| 3/14/26 | Super Wide 25 competition | In episode 91 of Matt Loves Cameras we judge the Super Wide 25 film competition!Matthew Joseph(Melbourne, Australia)Hasselblad Xpan with the 30mm. Alex Luyckx(Milton, Ontario, Canada)The Carnegie shot on the Nikon F5 with the 20mm f/2.8D lens on Efke KB100 and developed in 510-Pyro.The Creek: Shot on a Minolta Maxxum 9 with the 20mm f/2.8 lens using RPX 25 and a Red Filter, developed with Fujifilm Microfine.Condo Living: Shot on a Mamiya m645 with the 35mm f/3.5 lens, a red filter on Rollei Retro 400s and developed with Fujifilm Super Prodol. The Bridge - Also the Mamiya m645 and 35mm f/3.5 lens on Kodak TMax 100 rated at ASA-32 and developed in Fujifilm Microfine.Iain Pretty (Manchester, UK)This was Sprocket Rocket with some Candido film, developed in lab and scanned at home!Dave Ackerman (Austin, TX)Both shot with a Reto Ultrawide + Slim with Ektar 100 in Sept 2025. I like the IH35 shot more. These were scanned at home but commercially developed.John Roberts (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada)All three are using the Hasselblad SuperWide C, with HP5+, XP2 Super and Kodak Gold, the image with my kids playing on the rope swing is my favourite of the three, it is a great image of them playing.Dale Willetts (Walsall, UK)Disderi Robot 3, Cinestill 800T, Stand developed with Bellini C41 chems.Ken Tuomi (Seattle, WA USA)Lomo Sprocket Rocket, Lemay Museum annual car show, Kodak 250D, home processed with FPP ECN-2 developer. I love the individual character of classic cars. Favorite is “Corvair Rampside”, I accidentally found the focus sweet spot, note the rear quarter and logo, that’s sharp for a toy camera. Trivia- Corvair has an air-cooled boxer 6 in the rear and the bed has a built in fold down ramp (see black band).Eric Vandrick (Elkhart, Indiana, USA)These were all shot on Ultra Wide and Slim Cameras. The UltraMax frame made with an early UWS prototype camera sold by the Target Corporations in their E-Gear Series called the “See: Camera”. It has the exact same specs as the classic UWS but used the same body as the new RETO PANO, including the flash. The Tintype is a self-portrait featuring myself, one of my UWS cameras, and a copy of the UWS zine that I made (Ultra Wide Ineptitude). It was made with collodion poured on a piece of metal from a 35mm film cartridge cut to fit against the UWS film plane. I used one of those giant Speedotron pack and strobes to light it.The FPP Sun Color (Iso 1) frame was made with a standard UWS camera with it’s shutter paddle removed and then mounted in a Packard pneumatic shutter (allowing for bulb exposures (literally). The Lomo Turquoise frame was made with a standard UWS cameraSkip Williams (New Jersey, USA)All of these photos were taken with the Lomo LCA120 on 120 film. Roughly the same FOV as a 21mm lens on 35mm film. The Onions at a local farmers market. The Door was a local, now abandoned greenhouse. The two black and white scenes were taken in Lamberville, NJ, a sleepy little river town. The first of the last vestiges of fall before winter set in.Sara Snyder (Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA)Reto Pano Camera. Lab developed. I was so pleasantly surprised by this fun camera!Wayne Setser (Ten Mile, Tennessee, US)These were all made using a Noblex Pro 06/150f swing lens panoramic camera that I acquired in late 2022. They were all made on Ilford Delta 400 that I processed in Mytol, a home made version of Xtol, and printed on Ilford Warmtone fiber base paper developed in ID-78. I digitized to prints using a Sony A7 with a Pentax-M 50mm f/4 Macro lens.Michael Jolliffe (Sydney, Australia)Xpan 30mm lens, buk rolled Ilford HP5, home developed in a paterson tank with Fomadon P following the Massive Dev apps instructions. Scanned on Epson V800 :)Kai Augustin (Germany)All photos taken with my Olympus OM4Ti, which is very much my favourite OM, since it really has all the features you need in a MF SLR. Couple that with my beloved 21mm and it makes for a wonderfully small travel package. The film used is in the file name.Developed in a lab, but scanned and converted by myself. My favourite shot is probably the one of the old church in Kilkenny, Ireland. It is a rather touristy shot, but the lighting was just right that October evening.Daniel E Smith (Portland, Oregon, United States)I took this shot at the tail end of 2025 using a Soviet sling-lens panoramic camera: the KMZ-FT2. It has a 50mm fixed focused, fixed aperture lens, but uses a swinging mechanism to expose a 110mm section of 35mm film, roughly 3 frames. This results in an extremely wide 120 degree field of view with very little image distortion.I took this photo from a submarine dock looking out across to the downtown waterfront. I used expired vision 3 250D and developed it with a bleach bypass to highlight the muted tones of the early morning winter light.Shawn Eliason (Philadelphia, PA, USA)My father was a veteran and is buried at Washington’s Crossing National Cemetery. I went to visit him on Memorial Day this past May. I took my trusty Holga WPC pinhole camera, which is 40 mm but 13mm full frame equivalent. My favorite is the picture of my Dad’s tombstone on the right and the others off to the left.Matt Murray (Brisbane, Australia)Double exposure taken on the Kodak Snapic A1 on Lucky 200 colour film! | 4/20/24 | Kodak ColorPlus in China | I was nervous about taking the Olympus Stylus Epic to China. Not because I thought I would lose it or have it stolen, but because I was worried that I wouldn’t take any decent pictures with it. My February roll for the Frugal Film Project had problems with underexposure - so how would I go in China in early Spring? A 200 speed film wasn’t ideal, would there be enough light for my photos? As you can see from these images, I needn’t have worried. Most days we had glorious bright weather, although it was a little chilly. I was careful about taking images on this roll. I only pressed the shutter button when I thought I had a guaranteed banger. I love this shot of two young ladies in the Forbidden City. You might remember this image from China (People) Substack. By the time I got my Stylus Epic out, I had to go for a tighter shot and one of the 3 hula hoopers is out of frame, though you can still see her shadow on the right. I’m really pleased by how this whole roll came out. I didn’t use the ‘flash off’ function once. Clearly the issues with the February roll were my fault.Kodak ColorPlus 200 is such a good film, I prefer it over Gold and UltraMax. This shot in the Lingering Garden in Suzhou looks lovely. The roses are in focus but the pot plants in the background have a soft out-of-focus blur. Looking at these images, I can see why the Stylus Epic has a good reputation. The lens is sharp. Almost like digital. Yet its compact size makes it perfect to fit in your pocket and whip out at a moment’s notice. Maybe I’ll grow to love the Stylus Epic after all. Watch on YouTubeTake a look at over 20 images from this roll in my latest YouTube video. Also check out my first China video, there’s 100 images shot on the Fujifilm X100VI comparing 5 different film simulations. That’s it for this time, more China photos soon!CheersMattThanks for reading Matt Loves Cameras. I’d be chuffed if you share this post with your friends! | 3/19/24 | Desert Island Cameras #2 | Which 10 photography items would you take to a desert island? This is the second episode of a new interview segment - Desert Island Cameras! My guest is the amazing Molly Kate, talented photographer, writer with 35mmc, and popular film photography YouTuber @Eclectachrome Desert Island Cameras is of course a rip off of the very long running BBC radio show Desert Island Discs. Here are the rules: * You can bring 10 items to the island. * The first 8 items you can either be cameras or films. You could choose 4 cameras and 4 films, or 7 cameras and 1 film, or 1 camera and 7 films, or any other combination, it's up to you. However there are a couple of catches... * For every camera you bring, you must also bring film for it. So if you bring an SX-70 as item 1, you will also need to bring SX-70 film as item 2. * You must have owned or used all cameras and films you mention. The 9th item is your favourite photography-related book. The 10th and final slot is a luxury photography item not covered by the above. | 2/18/24 | Desert Island Cameras #1 | Which 10 photography-related items would you take to a desert island? This is the question I asked Theo Panagopoulos recently. Theo is a talented Sydney photographer, one of the hosts of the Camerosity podcast, and also has his own excellent camera review blog photothinking.com. It was wonderful to hear his 10 items as we progressed through our chat - not surpisingly his Mamiya 7 featured heavily in the mix!Of course my idea for Desert Island Cameras is a rip off of the long running BBC radio Desert Island Discs.Desert Island Camera rulesHere are the rules for this segment: * You can bring 10 items to the island. * The first 8 items you can either be cameras or films. You could choose 4 cameras and 4 films, 7 camerass and 1 film, 1 camera and 7 films, or any other combination. * For every camera you bring, you must also bring film for it. That is, if you bring an SX-70 as item 1, you will also need to bring SX-70 film as item 2. * You must have owned or used all cameras and films you mention. | 1/18/24 | 2 Old Camera Guys Talk Film Photography | What's the best brand new bang for buck film camera you can buy today? This was just one of many questions I had the pleasure of asking Dave Mihaly The Old Camera Guy. We start off by discussing how Dave's film photography channel has grown - almost 300 videos and over 1 million views! We then talk about best frugal choices in 2024 including: * Best bang for your buck brand new camera you can buy today * Best value film you can buy today * Second hand - best P&S recommend * Second hand - SLR recommend. Other topics we talk about include the Frugal Film Project, the new Pentax camera, family in photography, shooting digital and drones, and Super 8. To finish off, I quiz Dave to see if he can recognise film he's shot from his YouTube thumbnails. If you’d like to play along for that segment, check out the YouTube version of this conversation. | 12/16/23 | Art and photography | In recent months I’ve become more interested in art. I’ve bought a gouache set, some watercolour pencils, and found a few ‘how to draw’ books we had at home. So far there’s very little art being produced. Needing inspiration, I turned to 3 photography friends who are also talented artists.Matt Jones, Matthew Joseph, and Bill Thoo often share their artwork with others in a photography group chat. I’ve been amazed and inspired by their art this year. Matthew and Bill have produced beautiful works based on their travels. Matt is a prolific artist in his home studio in Thailand, often creating works from photos others post in the chat. Some of the topics of our conversation include:* Which came first for you? Art or photography?* Show and tell 2-3 pieces of art you're proud of* How has art affected or enhanced your photography?* Does making art come at the expense of photography?I hope you find this conversation as interesting as I did. It has renewed my interest in pursuing some form of art - if for no other reason than to get Mrs Murray off my back about my new found supply of neglected art materials! As well as listening to this conversation through your usual podcast app or on Substack, you can also listen / watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpkvnbYZPQwMatt Jones [SOCIAL LINKS REDACTED] Matthew Josepeh instagram.com/fotodudenz Bill Thoo instagram.com/billthoo MY SUBSTACK NEWSLETTER Sign up for my FREE Substack photography newsletter: https://mattlovescameras.substack.com/ Get full access to Matt Loves Cameras at mattlovescameras.substack.com/subscribe | 1h 14m 54s | ||||||
