| 5/22/26 | ![]() IC vs Independent? Selling? Marketing Activities? | This week’s Friday 15, we're welcoming Vanessa from Global Travel Collection! Let’s have some fun, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! I am an IC with about 2 years in the business. I'm considering going out on my own because I'm not happy with my situation for many reasons. How do you know it's the right time to make this change? What do you see as the pros and cons of staying an IC and being independent?I’m finding it can sometimes feel awkward or intimidating to confidently charge fees, upsell experiences, or position yourself as a premium service. What advice would you give to advisors who know they provide value but still struggle with the sales side of their business? There’s so much pressure right now for us to constantly be posting on social media, building a brand, creating content, and trying to stay visible online. What marketing activities are actually moving the needle for advisors today versus what’s just creating noise and burnout?Guide to charging fees - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/travel-agents-guide-to-charging-fees | — | ||||||
| 5/15/26 | ![]() Payments? Outreach? Using DMCs? | This week’s Friday 15, we're welcoming Samantha from Jus Adventures! Let’s have some fun, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! Hi!! I am a new agent (8 months) working on planning my first group trip and I want to build a girls trip to New Orleans and offer a package price and then clients can sign up to go. I have checked with Traveljoy and it appears that I am able to take payment through Traveljoy, for them to hold and then I can pay each supplier with a virtual card instead of charging the client 10 different transactions. Traveljoy would then the merchant of record and I feel this is safe. I tried getting a quote from a DMC and it's just not working out how I want and I feel like I don't have much control, so I really would rather piece it together myself since it's domestic anyway. I just feel like this would be so much more seamless for the client. Is this okay to do? Any tips or advice would be very much appreciated. (Feel free to cut/paraphrase if you decide to air this!) Thanks so much! -TiffanyI feel like I always have a question for you but you are the best at answering them. Here is my latest question. I have a new client that is a pretty big spender. I booked her on three cruises for February 2027. She is interested in booking a pre-hotel stay and possibly insurance but I have not heard back from her in a few weeks, she said should would take care of all of that later. I don't want to annoy her because she said she usually books a few cruises a year and I really want to keep her as a client. How often do you suggest I just check in with her without sounding like I am reaching out to add on to her sale? Thanks again!! Travel Dad MattI'm wondering about the economics of creating a trip for a client using a DMC or tour operator rather than piecing it together on your own? How do the commissions compare? Has anyone seen a good resource comparing the revenue of both routes? I focus on luxury FITs and land/sea itineraries primarily in Europe, East Asia and South American. I get that using a DMC to have a local person available for emergencies is helpful, perhaps even essential, but if I just book my clients through a DMC or tour operator am I limiting my income potential? And what does my client need me for if the DMC is doing all the work? - LaurieRESOURCES:What is a DMC? https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/what-is-dmc-destination-management-companyBooking Groups - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/supplier-want-you-know-booking-groups | — | ||||||

| 2/20/26 | ![]() Commission on Fees? Certifications? Facebook? | This week’s Friday 15, we're welcoming Dugan’s Travels! Let’s have some fun, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! How common is it for a Host Agency to take a commission on the planning/consulting/concierge/other fees I charge my clients? Is it even okay to charge commission on my planning fee given that I am an IC? For this question, I'm not asking about a payment processing fee if you use the Host payment processor. Rather, I'm talking about applying the same commission split to both sales and any fees I generate. Obviously, this would significantly impact my total profit if I have to give my HA 20 or 30% of my fees. What do you think is the most valuable certification? Travel Institute offers the CTA, CLIA has certifications as well as my Consortium Travel Leaders offers Leisure Travel and Luxury travel certificates. - ReginaI'm a newbie to the travel industry and I just started my business. I'm getting very close to choosing a host agency and I’m super excited to get started. I have a question about marketing on Facebook. Is it more beneficial to have a company page or group? Or both? I know the FB algorithms can be wonky, so I want to make sure I'm reaching a wide audience. - Shelly | — | ||||||
| 2/13/26 | ![]() CC Auths? Charging Fees? Switching Hosts? | This week’s Friday 15, we're welcoming Uniglobe Travel Center! Let’s have some fun, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us!I have several corporate clients that pay with the same card throughout the year. Can I have them sign a cc authorization form at the beginning of the year and how often do you suggest I renew it? They are extremely busy people and I cannot ask them to complete the form for each and every flight they need.I would love continued conversations about how to execute charging fees when different trips take such a different amount of time. Some people know what they want - some don't. I've been experimenting and every person I've told an hourly fee (I've tested it at $75 and $100 and gave my estimated timeline, they've passed on my services.) So I haven't gotten any fees in the 6 months I've been working on this. I've had some great success, but I have also wasted a ton of time with people shopping me and then taking my itinerary and booking it elsewhere to save $20. (especially on FIT trips) I've got to take control of my time and energy and make sure I'm spending time with the right people. But I have no idea how to actually implement fees and what a reasonable rate/package is. And I don't want to scare off people who could become great clients - KristinaWhat is the process of switching host agencies? I am unsure if my current one is a good fit, but I do have trips booked while using them, and am unsure if I can bring them to a new host.RESOURCES:Understanding the full CC authorizations any payments for agencies - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/credit-card-processing-for-travel-agencies (written by a lawyer)Guide to charging fees - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/travel-agents-guide-to-charging-feesWhat’s involved with switching host agencies - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/gifted-q1-2020 | — | ||||||

Let’s have some fun, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us!When choosing a supplier to work with, what are some questions to ask them about their support given to you and your clients. Same question for host agencies. It gets expensive trying so many only to discover the fit is not right. Thanks - BarbaraHi!!! I have basically been binge listening to the podcast for about a month now and I've enjoyed everything thus far!!I am a (fairly) new advisor. I've been under my host since November 2024 but I wasn't taking my business as serious as I wanted. I've rebranded and now I've launched with more confidence and have been showing up more now that I feel like my new business aligns with what I'm trying to do. My question is, since I've rebranded I know I want to add to my specialization or niche is cruising (small ships, river, ocean) BUT i am unsure of how to add this to my marketing when ny current focus is on slow travel. What would be any recommendations or insight into adding a new niche/specialization to my marketing? - SimoneThere seems to be more and more fraud in the travel industry. I am interested in knowing if TAs do more to screen clients before initiating a conversation with them - if so, what. | 1/23/26 | ![]() Reasonable fees? Preferred Suppliers? Thresholds for access? | This week’s Friday 15, we're welcoming Travel Leaders Market Square with Kelly and Rochelle! Let’s have some fun, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! How do I decide what reasonable travel fees are to charge my clients? I'm a newbie. Can you talk about how to determine the host agency preferred suppliers both before joining and once you’re a member? It’s very difficult to find suppliers on your own. Following up on the seminar at sea question. My host does not allow new advisors to attend these. The host is not being asked to pay (by the supplier or the IC) and the latest invitation came as a mass email to all the advisors. The ICs were encouraged to come by the supplier. Host has set a high sales threshold in order to participate. They have set this threshold for other things as well: access to consortium marketing supplies. I have terms and conditions in my TravelJoy that the clients have to sign when they pay a deposit and make payments. I had a client sign for a non-refundable deposit, They submitted a charge back for the deposit to their bank. What can I do?How do you start a partnership with someone? Someone wants to "get into" travel with me. I specialize in cruises. She has done a lot of all Inclusives, been to several destination weddings so that would be hers. Let’s have some fun, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! I have been listening to past Friday15’s and someone mentions that they send an email to prospective clients to explain HOW she is paid (commissions, fees etc). I'm communicating that I will be charging fees in my business, but while I am in my 1st year of business (currently), I am waiving those fees. But I want to have something that explains that to clients right away. What would you suggest including. - MelissaCan or should a new Travel Advisor Niche or Focus on Short Break Itineraries/Travel. 2-4-6 day trips. Why or why not? - DianaWhat I'm still not clear on are things like this: how do I present options and prices to a client, and give them time to make a decision? Am I supposed to reserve all of the options first to guarantee the price, and then cancel the discarded options afterward? Or do you just present it and hope the prices don't change in the meantime? So much to catch up on, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! I’m a relatively new advisor (I started about a year and a half ago) and I am trying to understand the concept of “leads”. My host agency (which I love!) does not have a lead generation program, and I would really like to see how a lead works and practice using my training and skills with a mock lead. Do you know of any programs or practice websites/workbooks for this? Also, in the future how might I generate real leads on my own? Thank you for everything you all do! - LisaI've signed up with a host agency, and done the online education, but I am still pretty confused about how to create FIT trips through the host. For years I have run my own trips and have strong relationships with specific hotels, lodges, transportation companies and tour guides. There are specific hotels and lodges that I always use when I book trips. Now that I have my own company and a host agency, I am realizing that none of my contacts/hotels, etc. are used or even findable on the host agency's site. When I did my initial call with the host agency, they said it wasn't a problem to book non preferred suppliers, but now I am not getting any info about how to book these hotels and lodges that I want to for upcoming trips. I can book these hotels and lodges with an OTA or directly with the hotel or lodge, but am I then liable as the supplier since I didn't book through the host agency? I was told by the attorney who I hired to do my Terms and Conditions that it was important for me to book everything through the host agency for my protection, but I am not sure how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you from another Minnesotan! So grateful for your work with new advisors!! - HeatherI'm a new advisor and the host agency's booking platform is soooo complicated! I'm still trying to make it through the training. So much to catch up on, plus some questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! I am wanting to transition from working fulltime at home for my current job, to owning my own homebased travel business. I still need to keep my fulltime salary while my travel business ramps up. I have been researching into host agencies, and think this is the way I will go. If I do choose to go this path, what should I expect? Will I have a specific contact that will help me (hold my hand) while I get started? - KristenQuestion regarding the registration of my travel agency: I'm French, I'm thinking of being hosted by a host agency based in the U.S and therefore register my agency as a LLC in the U.S since it's the easiest model for foreigners. Are there any specificity I need to be aware of? For example, what lawyer should I use? - LohanHow do you start a partnership with someone? Someone wants to "get into" travel with me. | 11/21/25 | ![]() FIT best practices? Costs to join a host? Niche and make money? | This week for the Friday 15, Shayna co-hosts with Sheila Folk of Travel Industry Solutions. We’ve got a bunch of great questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST. Join us! I'm very confused and overwhelmed by the FIT "best practice" for travel advisors. When advisors put together a/an FIT, do they always use tour suppliers (like Classic Vacations/Project Expeditions, etc), or make it themselves by reaching out directly to tour operators (if price is more favorable to client), or just patch things together with a DMC? How do advisors find DMCs if they don't have connections? Thank you in advance. With hosts, what start up costs can I expect when joining. Is it better to join one that charges a flat monthly rate, or pay a lot every year or a one-time fee? There's got to be setbacks for each one, I'd imagine. Any other costs with a host I should consider? How do I determine what my niche is? I feel like I will only make money if I sell luxury. | 11/14/25 | ![]() Help with BDMs! Group Bookings? Commission Splits? | This week for the Friday 15, Shayna co-hosts with Jennifer Dugan of Dugan’s Travels! This week we’ve got a bunch of great questions to discuss this Friday at 12 pm CST, and you know it’s gonna be good. Join us! I worked as an independent contractor for a brick-and-mortar agency before covid. BDMs visited us regularly with updates, and stayed to chat. Their presence drew attendees and raised my credibility. Unfortunately, that agency has the worst split in the business. I switched to a host agency with a much better split and no fees or minimum sales, but they're on the opposite coast. Now my BDMs, whom I've never met, are on the other side of the country and aren't about to co-host events or invite me to anything. BDMs based near me can't help because they work in territories. I never sold much with the new host and basically went dormant. Now, I'm planning to relaunch. However, the lack of BDM contact and support is paralyzing. How do the thousands of agents working in far-flung locations deal with this? Those I've talked with don't seem to realize the value of BDMs, both personally and professionally. Any advice? - LindaI am just starting out as a cruise specialist agent. I have seen other agents promoting group bookings that appear to be created by them with lower than advertised rates and extra perks. Can you explain how this works and the pros/cons of this? I know I am not ready for this yet, but I am very interested in how someone gets started with this and how it works. Thanks, - Travel Dad MattI have been in the industry for just over 2 years working part time while I build up my business. I am curious about host agency commission splits and why some host agencies have higher commission splits. I notice there is a range of agency commission splits 70/30, 80/20 or 90/10. Right now I am at a 70/30 split and I wonder if this is an average commission split? I wonder for host agencies with higher commission splits is it because they offer more perks or benefits than host agencies with a 90/10 split. - MichelleRESOURCES:➡️Talking more about BDM’s when switching hosts - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/switching-host-agencies-5-things-to-consider➡️Group booking tips directly from other travel advisors - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/group-booking-tips-travel-advisors-agents➡️Submit questions, sign up for reminders for the F15, along with that week's questions we'll be covering! https://hostagencyreviews.com/friday15 ➡️Commission splits - https://hostagencyreviews.com/blog/host-agency-commission-plan-comparison-calculator | — | ||||||
