Vietnam War veteran Duane “Dutch” Van Fleet was part of combat operations in South Vietnam. The U.S. Marine participated in numerous combat patrols and operations. Wounded twice during combat operations, he returned home from the war and attended Hillsdale College, graduating with honors. He returned to active duty as an officer, participating in combat operations in Operation Sharp Edge, Operation Desert Shield, and Operation Desert Storm. Juliane Malia Hillock from the class of 1991 has dedicated her life to education.Originally from Portland, Maine, she is the founding principal of Hozho Academy in Gallup, New Mexico, a Hillsdale College Barney Charter School. The Honorable Nicole Khoury from the class of 1999 is a rock star, both behind the bench and on stage. Erin Davis Valdez has had a long successful career in public policy, spending the last few years with the Texas Public Policy Foundation, where she worked with the governor’s office and the state legislature in shaping education policy. Dr. Elizabeth Edwards Spalding is Chairman of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) and Founding Director of the Victims of Communism Museum. A lifelong educator and frequent public speaker, the 1988 graduate is Senior Fellow at the Pepperdine University School of Public Policy and Visiting Fellow at the Van Andel Graduate School of Government at Hillsdale College. After an All-American career on the field, he spent more than 25 years in Hillsdale’s Admissions Office, helping the College recruit future Chargers.
