| 9/3/26 | How French Philosophy Wired Modern Thinking | How did a group of notoriously difficult French philosophers become intellectual rock stars on American college campuses — and how much do their ideas matter today? In The Frenchmen, writer and editor Emily Eakin traces the unlikely rise of French theory and the thinkers who transformed how a generation understood language, truth, power, and identity. In this conversation with guest host Michael Kovnat, Emily explains why figures like Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault became irresistible to students in the ’70s and ’80s, and how theory offered both intellectual sophistication and a new way to challenge the establishment. They explore how these ideas helped shape identity politics and our modern suspicion of institutions, why theory eventually fell out of fashion, and the scandals that accelerated its decline. Plus, Emily makes a surprising case for why the age of AI might prove some of the French theorists right. 🎥 The Next Big Idea is on YouTube! | 8/31/26 | A Nobel Prize Winner’s Plan to Save Democracy | Democracy is in the dumps. OK, that's a bit dramatic. But it's definitely not working as well as it used to. Good thing Daron Acemoglu — Nobel laureate, MIT Institute Professor, and one of the world's most-cited economists — has a plan to fix it. Today on the show, he explains why liberal democracy has faltered in the post-industrial age and makes the case for upgrading it to a new "working-class liberalism" built around good jobs, strong communities, and greater tolerance. We also discuss what today's populist movements get right and wrong, and why immigration has become such a powerful political fault line. Plus: Why Daron, once skeptical that AI would amount to much economically, now thinks a transformation larger than the Industrial Revolution is on the table. His new book is What Happened to Liberal Democracy? Remaking a Politics of Shared Prosperity. __________ 🎥 The Next Big Idea is now on YouTube! | 8/27/26 | How to Unlock the Creativity You Already Have | What if creativity isn’t a talent you’re born with, but a muscle you’ve simply stopped using? In Daily Creative, Blythe Harris and Mallory May make the case that everyone is creative — even the people convinced they can’t draw, paint, write, or make anything “good.” The real problem is that perfectionism, routine, and our obsession with getting things right have trained many of us to stop experimenting altogether. In this conversation with Rufus, Blythe and Mallory reveal why even a few minutes of creative play can boost well-being, sharpen your thinking, and pull you out of autopilot. They share simple ways to quiet your inner critic, explain why constraints can actually make you more creative, and show how noticing what catches your eye can help you develop a point of view that’s genuinely your own. And in an age of AI and automation, they argue that exercising your creativity may matter more than ever. 📕 Learn more about Blythe and Mallory’s book at https://dailycreative.com/ and be sure to check out their Substack: https://dailycreative.substack.com/ 🎥 The Next Big Idea is now on YouTube! | 8/20/26 | Can Democracy Survive the AI Revolution? | Today, we're revisiting Rufus's conversation with Yuval Noah Harari about his book Nexus. It's Harari at his best — a soaring overview of human history that turns, almost imperceptibly, into a gripping argument about the world we are building right now. The questions he raises about how AI affects our politics are even more relevant now than they were back then. At the time, Harari warned that AI was moving "much, much faster" than he expected. Since then, it has only accelerated — and so have Harari's concerns. At Davos this year, he said: "Anything made of words will be taken over by AI. If laws are made of words, then AI will take over the legal system. If books are just combinations of words, then AI will take over books." Which makes the ideas they explore in this conversation feel less like speculation about the future and more like a description of the present. __________ 🎥 The Next Big Idea is now on YouTube! | 8/17/26 | Your Mind Is a Propagandist | Your brain is a master storyteller. The problem? It’s also an unreliable narrator. We like to think our beliefs are built on facts, logic, and careful reasoning. But psychologist and author Owen Fitzpatrick argues that the process often works in reverse: we decide what feels true, then search for evidence that proves us right. This can reinforce limiting beliefs, fuel political polarization, and make us surprisingly susceptible to propaganda. In this conversation with guest host Michael Kovnat, Owen explores how these narratives shape our confidence, identity, and decisions — and what it takes to change them. 📖 Inner Propaganda: Leading Hearts and Minds Through Turbulent Times by Owen Fitzpatrick 🎥 The Next Big Idea is now on YouTube! | 7/30/26 | You Can Just Do Things | Why do some people seem to create opportunities wherever they go while others spend years waiting for the right break? According to Cate Hall — lawyer turned poker player turned drug addict turned CEO of a $3B foundation — the difference isn't luck. It's the ability to question assumptions, reject the default path, and realize the world is far more malleable than it seems. In this episode, Rufus and Cate explore what it really means to become a high-agency person — a.k.a. someone who just does things. Together, they unpack why ambition isn't the same as agency, how fear of embarrassment and an obsession with hard work hold us back, and why curiosity, unconventional thinking, and expanding your "surface area for luck" are the keys to creating extraordinary opportunities. Cate's new book, You Can Just Do Things, is out now. 🎥 The Next Big Idea is now on YouTube! | 7/27/26 | The Lost Art of Asking Questions | In the age of AI, endless information, and instant certainty, philosopher Lani Watson argues that questions — not answers — are humanity's greatest intellectual advantage. Today, she explains why curiosity is a biological superpower, why schools unintentionally teach us to stop questioning, and how learning to embrace a question-oriented mindset can make us better thinkers, leaders, and humans. Lani’s new book is Q: The Hidden Power of Questions in a World That Wants Answers. You can take her Questioning Strengths Assessment here. *** 🎥 The Next Big Idea is now on YouTube! | 7/23/26 | Sorry, Skeptics — AI Is Not a Bubble | First, a few numbers. This year Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta will spend more than $700 billion building AI infrastructure. There are 1,500 data centers in development across the country. AI-linked stocks make up at least 40% of the S&P 500. These are the kinds of numbers that make some economists jumpy. If this whole AI thing doesn't pan out, they warn, we're headed for the mother of all crashes. But Azeem Azhar is not one of those economists. He and his team recently spent months turning the AI economy inside out, and they just released a report called The State of the AI Economy. It contains surprising answers to what has become an increasingly pressing question: is this the biggest bubble ever blown, or are we building the durable machinery of a radically more abundant world? In this conversation, Azeem joins Rufus to unpack why AI adoption is growing faster than the internet or mobile, what Wall Street and Silicon Valley may still be getting wrong, and why the most important skill in an AI-powered future may have nothing to do with AI. Along the way, they explore energy, jobs, investing, AI safety, and what exponential change means for the next generation. 💬 PULL QUOTES: "Two years ago I would have said to [my kids], 'Listen, you need to learn how to use AI.' I don't think that's as true now as it was. They need to know how to engage with it. But more importantly, they really need to know how to think for themselves." "If you look at revenue per employee at really excellent firms in the traditional economy, it's $400,000 per employee. Anthropic is up at $10 million." "The thing that shows up in 50 or 60% of investment booms that turn to bubbles is when funding quality gets a bit funky. Last year, the funkiness was low. Now the funkiness is the way the salmon looks at an all-you-can-eat sushi at about 3:30 in the afternoon. It's still edible, but it's not as good as it was at 1:15." 👤 About the Guest: Azeem Azhar is the founder of Exponential View, a deeply-researched newsletter that has become essential reading for nearly 300,000 investors, entrepreneurs, academics, and policymakers. He is an executive fellow at Harvard Business School, a visiting fellow at Oxford, and a former correspondent for the Economist. He’s also an entrepreneur, an investor, the author of The Exponential Age, and a past guest on this show. 🎥 The Next Big Idea is now on YouTube! | 6/15/26 | This World Cup Is Messy. Watch It Anyway. | The World Cup kicked off over the weekend, and so far the mood is meh. Fans are fuming over sell-your-kidney ticket prices, frightened by reports that ICE may target matches, tailgates, and sports bars, and generally feeling down on this quadrennial celebration. We wanted to know: Is there any joy left in this thing? So we called up Simon Kuper. He's a columnist at the Financial Times, "one of the best sportswriters in the English language today" (The New Yorker), and author of the Next Big Idea Club must-read World Cup Fever. He's also attended every World Cup since 1990. Simon tells us how the tournament bridges political divides, why suicides decline during the World Cup, whether “sportswashing” really works, and which storylines to follow, no matter if you're a die-hard footy fan or a first-time viewer. 🔗 SPONSORED BY: Fora — Build and scale your own travel business by becoming a Fora Advisor today at foratravel.com/idea Northwest Registered Agent — Helping small business owners and entrepreneurs launch and grow businesses for nearly 30 years.
