Largest Podcast Genres by Audience 2026: All 19 Apple Categories Ranked
Updated October 2026 · Based on CastFox data covering 27 snapshots of all 19 US Apple Podcasts genre charts (2026-02-24 to 2026-10-03), 51,300 rank rows and follower counts for 395 charting shows
This is the CastFox ranking of the largest podcast genres by audience in 2026, and News leads it: the typical show on the US News chart carries 1,125,229 followers and 194.4 million recorded plays, more than 66 times the figure for Kids & Family at the other end of the table. We ranked 19 Apple genre charts using follower and play counts held in CastFox for 395 shows that were in a US genre top 100 on 2026-10-03.
Audience size and chart position are not the same thing, and this is the post where the difference matters most. The Moth was number 2 on the Arts chart on 2026-10-03 with 702,233 followers, while The MeidasTouch Podcast was number 18 in News with 6,478,138. Rank tells you how a show is doing against its own category. Followers and plays tell you how many people are actually there. We have both, so this ranking uses the second one and reports the first alongside it.
The ranking metric is the median follower count per charting show, not a genre total. Totals reward whichever category we happen to hold more data for, and our follower coverage runs from 5 shows in one genre to 44 in another. A median is the figure for the show in the middle, so it describes the typical show in a category and does not move when one outlier joins the chart. Two genres, History and Government, fall below our minimum of eight covered shows and are listed unranked at the foot of the table.
Across the 1,900 US chart positions we track in these 19 categories, the 395 shows carrying follower data account for 376.8 million followers and 128.2 billion plays. That is the base for every figure below. If you want the genre-by-genre view of which categories are gaining shows rather than which hold the most listeners, read podcast genres ranked by audience growth in 2026, which measures chart turnover and deliberately avoids audience numbers.

What a Large Podcast Audience Means in Chart Data
Apple publishes no download numbers, so every public ranking of podcast genres by audience is built from proxies. The useful question is which proxy. CastFox holds three that bear on audience size, and they answer different questions, so we report all three rather than blending them into one score.
Follower counts are the closest thing to a subscriber number. A follower has chosen to keep getting a show, which makes the figure a reasonable stand-in for a standing audience. Play counts are a lifetime total, so they reward long-running shows and daily publishers, and a 801-episode Sports show will out-count a 149-episode Technology show at the same audience size. Country reach, the number of national top 100s a show holds at once, measures breadth rather than depth and has no coverage gaps at all, because it comes from the charts themselves.
The ranking below uses followers, reports plays beside them, and then gives reach its own table. Where the three disagree, that disagreement is the interesting part. Sports has the second-highest median play count of any genre and the sixth-highest follower count, which is what a category of long-running daily shows looks like. History and Technology hold more shows in 25-plus national charts than any other category, yet neither is near the top on followers, which is what an internationally portable subject with a moderate audience looks like.
One honest limit up front. Follower and play counts are available for 395 of the 1,900 positions we track, about 21 percent, and coverage is not even across categories. We report the covered-show count for every genre in the table so you can weigh each row. The medians are stable because the typical charting show in a category is well represented, but a genre with 5 covered shows deserves less weight than one with 44, and we have left the two thinnest genres unranked rather than pretend otherwise.
Largest Podcast Genres by Audience in 2026: The Full Ranking
All 19 Apple top-level genres, ranked by the median follower count of their US top 100 shows on 2026-10-03. The last two rows carry too little follower data to rank and are shown for completeness. Plays are lifetime totals for the median show, not monthly figures.
| # | Genre chart | Median followers per show | Median plays per show | Median reviews | Shows with follower data | Shows in 25+ country charts | Distinct shows through the US top 100 |

| 1 | News | 1,125,229 | 194.4 million | 10,124 | 43 of 100 | 40 | 210 |

| 16 | Arts | 27,666 | 1.3 million | 498 | 22 of 100 | 23 | 247 |
| 17 | Kids & Family | 17,045 | 628,617 | 1,804 | 26 of 100 | 24 | 214 |
| – | History | 143,272 | 7 million | 4,642 | 7 of 100 | 58 | 212 |
| – | Government | 12,056 | 1.7 million | 547 | 5 of 100 | 40 | 332 |
The spread is the headline. News and True Crime, the top two, both clear a million followers for the median charting show. By Business in ninth place that figure is 126,111, and by Kids & Family in last place it is 17,045. A number 20 slot in News is a different commercial proposition from a number 20 slot in Arts, and nothing on the chart page tells you that.
What Is the Most Popular Podcast Genre?
By audience per show, News. The median show in the US News top 100 holds 1,125,229 followers and 194.4 million recorded plays, the highest figures of any category in our data, and 43 of its 100 chart positions carry follower data, which makes it one of the better covered genres in the table. The Daily is the clearest illustration: it was number 1 on the chart on 2026-10-03 and held a top 100 place in 77 of our 78 countries at the same time.
News owes that position to cadence as much as to subject. The median News show in the top 100 has published 600 episodes, second only to Sports at 801, and a daily show accumulates both followers and plays faster than a weekly one. Today, Explained carries 12,808,371 followers and 3.8 billion plays; The Ben Shapiro Show carries 8,216,345 followers. Reach is wide too: The Daily and Global News Podcast each held a News top 100 place in 77 countries.
True Crime is second and gets there differently. Its median charting show carries 1,067,699 followers, within 5 percent of News, on a median of 223 episodes rather than 600. That is a smaller library doing the same work, and it shows up in review counts: the median True Crime show has 26,635 reviews against 10,124 for News, the highest review figure in the table and a sign of an audience that engages rather than just listens. Crime Junkie and Rotten Mango both held a top 100 place in 77 countries on 2026-10-03.
If "most popular" means the category with the most shows competing, the answer changes. Religion & Spirituality put 4,408 distinct shows into a national top 100 somewhere in the world on a single day, ahead of Arts at 3,998 and Society & Culture at 3,818. Those are crowded categories, not necessarily large ones, and the gap between the two readings is covered in the catalog section below.
Most Listened to Podcast Categories 2026
Ranked by plays rather than followers, the table reorders. Plays are lifetime totals, so this is the ranking of categories whose shows have accumulated the most listening, which favors daily publishers and long-running libraries.
| # | Genre chart | Median plays per charting show | Median episodes | Median followers | Shows with data |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | News | 194,350,183 | 600 | 1,125,229 | 43 of 100 |
| 2 | Sports | 96,617,678 | 801 | 315,820 | 11 of 100 |

| 10 | TV & Film | 9,333,784 | 474 | 86,108 | 12 of 100 |
| 11 | History | 6,950,654 | 287 | 143,272 | 7 of 100 |
| 12 | Music | 6,515,231 | 219 | 113,185 | 18 of 100 |
| 13 | Business | 6,193,462 | 300 | 126,111 | 44 of 100 |
| 14 | Education | 5,993,860 | 220 | 124,382 | 19 of 100 |
| 15 | Technology | 5,710,283 | 149 | 99,009 | 35 of 100 |
| 16 | Government | 1,702,410 | 159 | 12,056 | 5 of 100 |
| 17 | Arts | 1,267,429 | 243 | 27,666 | 22 of 100 |
| 18 | Fiction | 864,928 | 142 | 45,306 | 11 of 100 |
| 19 | Kids & Family | 628,617 | 173 | 17,045 | 26 of 100 |
News holds first place on both measures. Sports moves up to second on plays from sixth place on followers, because its charting shows carry a median of 801 episodes, the largest libraries in the table. Pardon My Take is a fair example of the pattern: 1,093,751 followers, 82,040 reviews and number 1 on the chart.
Comedy is third with 71.5 million plays for the median show. The Joe Rogan Experience is the category's largest single audience in our data at 25,246,630 followers and 6.7 billion plays, and it held a Comedy top 100 place in 77 countries on 2026-10-03. Below the top five, play counts fall away fast: Music sits at 6.5 million and Business at 6.2 million for the median show, and Kids & Family is at 628,617.
Treat the bottom of this table as a statement about library size, not about quality or about the audience a new show could reach. Kids & Family shows have a median of 173 episodes and Fiction shows 142, which is most of the explanation for their play figures.
Podcast Genres Ranked by Audience Size
The 17 ranked genres fall into four clear bands rather than a smooth curve. The gaps between the bands are larger than the gaps inside them, which makes the bands more useful than the individual positions when you are deciding where to spend a budget or a pitch.
Tier 1: over a million followers for the median show
News, True Crime. Median followers of 1,067,699 to 1,125,229. These are the only two categories where a mid-table chart position still implies an audience in the seven figures, and both are national-news-adjacent subjects with daily or near-daily publishing. Dateline NBC, at number 2 in True Crime, carries 13,299,133 followers and holds a top 100 place in 68 countries.
Tier 2: a quarter of a million to a million
Religion & Spirituality, Society & Culture, Science, Sports, Health & Fitness, Comedy. Median followers of 250,890 to 368,538. This is the broad middle of the podcast business and where most large sponsorship money goes. Health & Fitness is the best covered genre in the tier with 30 shows carrying data, and Huberman Lab is its largest at 8,254,074 followers while holding a top 100 place in all 78 countries we track. Science is the tier's quiet performer: 53 of its shows hold a place in 25 or more national charts, and Radiolab and Hidden Brain are each charting in 78.
Tier 3: roughly 85,000 to 130,000
Business, Education, Music, Technology, Leisure, TV & Film. Median followers of 86,108 to 126,111. Business and Technology sit here, and they are the two best covered genres in the whole table at 44 and 35 shows with data, so these medians are among the most reliable numbers in this post. They also explain a pattern advertisers notice: business and technology shows command high CPMs on audience quality rather than audience size. Lex Fridman Podcast holds 5,209,577 followers and a top 100 place in 78 countries, but the median Technology show on the chart carries 99,009 followers and 191 reviews, the lowest review figure of any genre.
Tier 4: under 80,000
Fiction, Arts, Kids & Family. Median followers of 17,045 to 45,306. These are the categories where chart position and audience size diverge most. Arts put 3,998 distinct shows into a national top 100 on 2026-10-03, the second largest field of any genre, on a median of 27,666 followers per charting show. Kids & Family is last at 17,045, which is a measure of how listening works in that category rather than of how much of it happens: a parent follows one or two shows and plays them repeatedly for a child who follows nothing.
History and Government are unranked. History has follower data for only 7 of its 100 chart positions and Government for 5, below our threshold of eight. For what it is worth, the covered History shows have a median of 143,272 followers and the category holds 58 shows in 25-plus national charts, the most of any genre, so it is a wide category that we cannot size confidently.
Which Podcast Genre Has the Most Listeners?
Per show, News. In total across a category, the question cannot be answered honestly from public data, and it is worth being clear about why, because most articles that answer it are adding up numbers that do not add up.
A category total needs two things we do not have: follower counts for every show in the category, not the 21 percent of chart positions we cover, and a way to handle the same listener following six shows in the same genre. Followers are not unique people and they are not comparable across platforms. What we can report is the combined follower count of the shows we do cover, which for News is 86.3 million across 43 shows and for Comedy is 46.8 million across 26 shows. Those are real sums of real figures, and they are still not category audiences.
So use the median as the comparison and the chart as the shortlist. If the question behind "which podcast genre has the most listeners" is where a single placement reaches the most people, the ranking above answers it: a mid-chart News or True Crime show reaches more people than a top-five show in most other categories. If the question is which category has the most listening activity in total, News again leads on plays at 194.4 million for the median show, roughly 3 times the Comedy figure.
The audience labels CastFox derives for each show point the same way. Technology shows are most often labelled as reaching professionals, 36 of its covered shows carrying that label, while Kids & Family shows are labelled for kids 27 times and Comedy shows for teens 30 times. Those labels describe who a show is for, not how many of them there are, which is exactly the distinction this section is about.
Biggest Podcast Genres on Apple Podcasts
Reach is the one measure here with no coverage gaps, because it is read straight off the charts. CastFox captures the Apple Podcasts top 100 for every genre in 78 countries, so for any show we can count how many national charts it holds at once. A show in 25 or more is portable across languages and markets; a show in one is a national hit.
| # | Genre chart | Shows in 25+ country charts | Shows in 10+ country charts | Distinct shows charting worldwide | Median followers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | History | 58 | 144 | 2,252 | 143,272 |
| 2 | Technology | 57 | 126 | 2,499 | 99,009 |
| 3 | Science | 53 | 123 | 2,669 | 332,525 |
| 4 | True Crime | 49 | 166 | 2,042 | 1,067,699 |
| 5 | Fiction | 47 | 153 | 2,575 | 45,306 |
| 6 | Business | 46 | 100 | 3,647 | 126,111 |
| 7 | Comedy | 44 | 127 | 2,776 | 250,890 |
| 8 | News | 40 | 125 | 3,371 | 1,125,229 |
| 9 | Government | 40 | 108 | 2,103 | 12,056 |
| 10 | Music | 39 | 124 | 3,375 | 113,185 |
| 11 | Education | 35 | 123 | 3,333 | 124,382 |
| 12 | Sports | 32 | 108 | 3,313 | 315,820 |
| 13 | Leisure | 29 | 104 | 3,585 | 88,133 |
| 14 | TV & Film | 29 | 138 | 3,086 | 86,108 |
| 15 | Society & Culture | 26 | 99 | 3,818 | 353,844 |
| 16 | Health & Fitness | 25 | 108 | 3,802 | 273,463 |
| 17 | Kids & Family | 24 | 123 | 3,239 | 17,045 |
| 18 | Arts | 23 | 86 | 3,998 | 27,666 |
| 19 | Religion & Spirituality | 15 | 75 | 4,408 | 368,538 |
This table is close to the inverse of the first one at the top end. History leads with 58 shows in 25 or more national charts, followed by Technology at 57 and Science at 53, and none of those three is in the follower top four. The reason is subject matter: a history, technology or science episode is as relevant in Dublin as in Denver, while a politics-heavy news show or a domestic sports show is not. Acquired, Lex Fridman Podcast and Hard Fork each held a Technology top 100 place in 77 or more countries on 2026-10-03.
At the other end, Religion & Spirituality has 15 shows in 25-plus charts despite putting 4,408 distinct shows into a national top 100, the largest field of any genre. That is a category of local audiences in many countries rather than a global one, which matters if you are buying across markets.
If you are picking shows rather than categories, the per-genre rankings do that work: News in best news podcasts 2026, True Crime in best true crime podcasts 2026, Comedy in best comedy podcasts 2026, and Science in best science podcasts 2026.
Where the Catalog Is Large and the Audience Is Not
Seven categories put more shows onto national charts than News does, and three of them sit in the bottom half of the follower ranking. Religion & Spirituality leads the field at 4,408 distinct shows charting worldwide on one day, with a median of 368,538 followers per US charting show. Arts is at 3,998 shows and 27,666 followers. Health & Fitness at 3,802 shows is the exception that proves the point, because it also clears 273,463 followers for the median show.
A crowded chart with a modest median is the easiest category to get into and the hardest to get paid in. 332 distinct shows passed through the Government US top 100 across our 27 snapshots and 299 through Society & Culture, against 173 for Comedy, which is the most locked-in chart we track. A new show has roughly twice the chance of surfacing in the first two as in the third, and considerably less to show for it on arrival in one of them.
For a new show, that trade is often worth taking: a chart position in a crowded category is a credential you can use. For an advertiser it usually is not, because a top 20 place in a thin category can mean an audience smaller than a number 80 show in News. We measured chart turnover across all 19 categories separately in podcast genres ranked by audience growth in 2026, and reading it next to this table is the fastest way to see which categories are both open and worth entering.
What This Means if You Buy Ads or Pitch Guests
The practical use of this table is that it prices a chart position. Before this, "number 15 in Education" and "number 15 in News" read the same in a media kit. They are not the same: the median Education chart show carries 124,382 followers and the median News chart show 1,125,229.
For advertisers
Use the follower median as a sanity check on the rate you are quoted. A show well below its category median at the same chart position is either early in its growth or carrying a chart place it cannot sustain, and both are worth knowing before you sign. Business and Technology are the categories where you should expect to pay a premium over audience size, because their listeners convert; the 44 covered Business shows and 35 covered Technology shows make those two medians the firmest in the table. Our genre CPM figures live in podcast advertising CPM by genre 2026 and the buying process in the podcast media buying guide.
For guest bookers and PR teams
Audience size is the wrong first filter. A 99,009-follower Technology show whose audience is labelled professional is a better placement for a B2B founder than a million-follower True Crime show, and the reach table tells you which shows travel internationally if that matters to the client. Shortlist on relevance and reach, then use the medians to rank what is left.
Vetting a category before you commit
Four steps, which is how CastFox is organized. Discover the shows in a category with the chart history and follower counts side by side. Analyze a shortlist for consistency, country reach and detected sponsors, so you can see who already buys there. Organize the survivors into a target list with verified contacts. Pitch with the show's own numbers in the first paragraph. The podcast finder and AI podcast discovery do the first step across all 19 categories at once.
Methodology: Where These Numbers Come From
CastFox captures the Apple Podcasts top 100 for every genre in 78 countries and stores each capture as a dated snapshot. This post uses 27 US snapshots of all 19 Apple top-level genres taken between 2026-02-24 and 2026-10-03, which is 51,300 dated rank rows, plus the worldwide snapshot of 2026-10-03 across all 78 countries. Counting a show once per genre, 59,891 distinct shows held a top 100 place somewhere in the world on that date.
For every show in a genre's US top 100 on 2026-10-03 we read the follower count, lifetime play count and review count held in CastFox, which come from the show's platform totals, not from an estimate or a model. 395 of the 1,900 positions carry a follower count. Genres are ranked by the median of those follower counts, highest first, with ties broken by country reach. A genre with fewer than eight covered shows is listed unranked, which excludes History and Government.
Medians, not means, throughout, because a single show with 27.5 million followers would otherwise decide a category's position. Country reach counts the distinct countries in which a show held a top 100 place in that genre on 2026-10-03. Episode counts and publishing cadence come from each show's own feed. Distinct shows through the US top 100 counts every show that held any of the 100 positions on any of the 27 snapshot dates.
What this post does not contain: download numbers, listener estimates, CPMs, or any figure we cannot trace to a row in CastFox. Apple does not publish downloads and we do not model them. Follower and play counts are platform totals with the coverage limits stated above, so treat them as a floor on a show's audience rather than a census of it, and read the per-genre coverage column before quoting a median anywhere it matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most popular podcast genre in 2026?
News, measured by audience per show. The median show in the US Apple Podcasts News top 100 carries 1,125,229 followers and 194.4 million recorded plays, the highest of any of the 19 top-level genres. True Crime is second at 1,067,699 followers, and both categories are far ahead of third-placed Religion & Spirituality at 368,538. If you mean the category with the most shows competing rather than the largest audiences, that is Religion & Spirituality, which put 4,408 distinct shows into a national top 100 on 2026-10-03.
Which podcast genre has the biggest audience per show?
News, at 1,125,229 followers for the median charting show, which is about 66 times the Kids & Family figure of 17,045. The ranking changes if you measure lifetime plays instead of followers: Sports moves to second place on plays because its charting shows carry a median of 801 episodes, the largest libraries of any genre.
Can you measure podcast audience size from the Apple Podcasts charts?
Not from rank alone. A chart position is relative to the other shows in that category on that day, so number 10 in Arts and number 10 in News describe completely different audiences. What makes a size comparison possible is pairing the chart with follower and play counts, which is what this post does for 395 shows. Apple publishes no download figures, so any article giving you per-genre download numbers is modelling them.
Which podcast genres have the smallest audiences in 2026?
Among the 17 genres we can rank, Kids & Family at 17,045 median followers, Arts at 27,666 and Fiction at 45,306. Small per show does not mean small in total or uncommercial: Arts put 3,998 distinct shows onto national charts on a single day, and Kids & Family listening concentrates on repeat plays by listeners who never follow a feed.
How is this ranking built?
We take every show in each genre's US top 100 on 2026-10-03, read its follower count, lifetime plays and reviews from CastFox, and rank the 19 genres by the median follower count of the shows that carry one. 395 of 1,900 chart positions carry follower data, coverage runs from 5 to 44 shows per genre, and genres below eight covered shows are left unranked. Country reach comes from the same-day snapshot of all 78 charts, and chart depth from 27 US snapshots between 2026-02-24 and 2026-10-03.
